Rutter chosen Rotary Student of the Month

Rutter will be headed to basic training after graduation for the Army National Guard, then he will attend Northwestern and will wrestle for the Raiders while studying business.

Spencer Hy-Noon Kiwanis welcomed new member, Renae Behrends, pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church. She was sponsored by Merlyn Winther and inducted by club President Kelsie Baccam.

Spencer observes Poppy Day

The city of Spencer celebrated Poppy Day Friday, Oct. 8, in honor of veterans. Representatives from the Spencer VFW Post 3159 and VFW Auxiliary passed out hand-crafted poppies in Bomgaars, Fareway, Hy-Vee, the post office, Sisters Cafe and Walmart for a donation toward local charitable programs on behalf of needy and disabled veterans.

Charles Walker

Graveside services for Charles Walker, 70, of Spencer, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2021, at Poland Township Cemetery in Marathon. There will be no visitation. Walker passed away Friday, Oct. 8, 2021, at Spencer Hospital. Warner Funeral Home of Spencer is in charge of arrangements.

Phillip Grady

Memorial services for Phillip Grady, 75, of Spencer, will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, 2021, at Warner Chapel in Spencer. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at Warner Funeral Home in Spencer. Military services will be conducted by the American Legion Glen Pedersen Post 1 and Clay County VFW Post 3159. Burial will be at a later date. Grady passed away Saturday, Sept. 25, 2021, at Minneapolis VA Health Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Construction projects

**Stolley Trail Work
This week, replacement of a small section of trail at Stolley Park will result in the closure of the trail near the river bridge.
**2021 Seventh Avenue SW Sewer Extension Project
BD Construction has constructed the portion of the sewer main that is located along Seventh Avenue SW. They started dewatering to construct the main located on the extension of Ninth Street SW, west of Seventh Avenue SW.
**2021 Fourth Street HMA Overlay Project

Public welcome planned for new city administrator

The city of Spencer will host a public welcome event for new Spencer City Manager Dan Gifford on Monday, Nov. 1, 5:30-6:30 p.m. in council chambers at Spencer City Hall.
The building will also be open for a walk-through tour during the event.

Johnny Appleseed shares trade secrets at Sacred Heart

Sacred Heart Catholic School was paid a visit by Johnny Appleseed (played by Brad Smith), who taught the kids how to make fresh apple juice.
After trying out his machine, the kids were able to try the tasty treat they helped make.

Ambassadors welcome Jaded Beauty

The Spencer Chamber Ambassadors helped owners Justice and Luc Cauthron cut the ribbon at their new hair salon, Jaded Beauty, on Tuesday. The salon, located at 324 Grand Ave., opened in late August following months of renovations. The salon offers a wide range of services, including cuts, color, waxing and facials. In addition, they have five chairs available for other beauticians to rent.

Philip Grady

Services are pending for Philip Grady, 75, of Spencer, who passed away Saturday, Sept. 25, 2021, at Minneapolis VA Healthcare Center. Warner Funeral Home of Spencer is in charge of arrangements.

Alvin Norgaard

Memorial services for Alvin Norgaard, 92, of Marathon, formerly of Spencer, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2021, at Living Word Church. Visitation will take place beginning at 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 11, 2021, with family present from 5-7 p.m. at Warner Funeral Home in Spencer. Norgaard passed away Thursday, Oct. 7, 2021 at his home in Marathon. Burial will be at North Lawn Memorial Park in Spencer. Warner Funeral Home of Spencer is in charge of arrangements.

Terry Robinson

Terry Wesley Robinson, such a wonderful, caring, generous person, left us on Sept. 9, 2021, after fighting head and neck cancer for over 2 1/2 years. He will be truly missed by all of those who have ever known him. He will never be forgotten and will always be in our hearts.

Deanna Orwig

Funeral services for Deanna Rae Orwig, 72, of Spencer, will be conducted at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Oct. 8, 2021, at Hope Reformed Church in Spencer. Rev. Perry DeGroot will officiate the service. Interment will be conducted at Riverside Cemetery in Spencer.

Mayor proclaims Poppy Day in Spencer

Representatives from the Spencer VFW Post 3159 and VFW Auxiliary joined Spencer Mayor Kevin Robinson in council chambers at Spencer City Hall Wednesday evening for a special proclamation signing declaring Friday, Oct. 8, Buddy Poppy Day in Spencer. Those associated with the VFW and Auxiliary will be out in force passing out hand-crafted poppies for a donation toward local charitable programs on behalf of needy and disabled veterans.

Division 3 Kiwanis clubs prepare hygiene backpacks

**New officers installed for service organizations
The Division 3 Kiwanis Club met in Emmestburg for its annual hygiene backpack event and installation of officers for 2021-22. Lt. Gov. Brent Harris welcomed all in attendance and Nebraska-Iowa Gov. Curt Ries inducted area officers. All Spencer Kiwanis clubs were represented and participated in the division project of filling of the hygiene backpacks which are distributed by the area office of UDMO.
