Chuck and Pat Schmidt are making a difference through special class experiences for all grades in Spencer Community Schools and through the establishment of two scholarships. For several years they have been Spencer residents, business professionals and generous community philanthropists. The Schmidts have donated $25,000 to offer enrichment experiences in line with curriculum for grades K-12 yearly.

Funeral services for Elaine Struve, 96, of Spencer, formerly of Rossie, will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2021, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Royal. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 25, 2021, with the family present in the Warner Chapel in Spencer. Burial will be at Lincoln Township Cemetery in rural Rossie. Struve passed away Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2021, at Spencer Hospital. Warner Funeral Home of Spencer is in charge of arrangements.

Verna Campbell

Funeral services for Verna Campbell, 87, of Spencer, will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, 2021, at First Baptist Church in Spencer. Rev. Curtis Batschelet will officiate the service. Visitation will be one hour before the service. Following the service there will be a lunch served in the church hall. Campbell passed away Thursday, Oct. 21, 2021, at Lakes Regional Healthcare in Spirit Lake. Warner Funeral Home of Spencer is in charge of arrangements.

Irene Polson

A celebration of life for Irene Evelyn Polson, 82, at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, 2021, at Hartley Funeral Home Chapel in Hartley. Visitation will begin at the chapel at 1 p.m. Interment at Pleasant View Cemetery in Hartley.
Irene, the daughter of Everett George and Freda Irene (Johnson) Heuer, was born June 5, 1939, at Hartley. She spent her youth in the Hartley area, attended school there and graduated from Hartley High School.

Hope Haven participates in Pink Walk

Hope Haven employees and clients took part in a Pink Walk for Breast Cancer Awareness Month on Tuesday, Oct. 19. Leaving from Grand Avenue Community Outreach, the group walked along Grand Avenue to Leach Park, making a loop and doubling back. The employees and clients of Hope Haven all wore at least one article of pink clothing in support of those living with cancer.

Spencer Hospital Surgery Center adds orthopedic robotics to technology offerings

This fall Spencer Hospital Surgery Center added the Mako robotics system to its high-tech surgery center. The orthopedic robotic technology is an addition to the robotic capabilities the hospital has offered for general and gynecological surgeries since 2015, and is part of a multimillion-dollar upgrade to the surgery center.

Haunted house returns this weekend

The Halloween tradition continues when the Spencer Jaycees host their annual spooky experience Nightmare at the Fair: Haunted Asylum beginning Friday night at 7 p.m. until midnight in the Tower Gate Pavilion on the Clay County Fairgrounds. The fright nights continue Saturday and next weekend ― Friday and Saturday ― from 7 p.m. until midnight and Sunday, Oct. 31, from 7-10 p.m. Admission is $15 or $10 with two nonperishable, nonexpired canned food items.

Robert Knudson

Funeral services for Robert Knudson, 84, of Spencer, will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 22, 2021, at the Warner Chapel in Spencer. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the chapel. Burial will be at North Lawn Memorial Park in Spencer. Knudson passed away Thursday, Oct. 14, 2021, at Aspire Nursing Home in Estherville. Warner Funeral Home of Spencer is in charge of arrangements.

Shirley Hamrick

Memorial services for Shirley Ann Hamrick, 91, of Spencer, at 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 23, 2021, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Webb. Kari Etherington will officiate the service. Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. Friday at the church. Interment will be at Lone Tree Cemetery in Sioux Rapids.

Jeremy Seyler

Jeremy Lee Seyler passed away Aug. 2, 2021, in McGregor. He was born to Janet Tierney Seyler and Melvin Seyler on Nov. 30, 1979, in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Wine strollers hit Grand Avenue for 11th annual event

Thursday evening, Spencer Main Street celebrated its 11th annual Wine Stroll. Passport and wineglass in hand, strollers made their way through downtown, sampling wine and other goodies from different businesses. With no two stores offering the same items, attendees were able to try a variety of beverages and snacks.

Nancy Roland

Services for Nancy Birks Roland, 92, will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, 2021, at United Methodist Church in Ruthven. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15, 2021, at Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Ruthven. Interment will be at Crown Hill Cemetery in Ruthven.

Barbara Culver

Barb G. Culver, 73, of Des Moines, passed away on Oct. 9, 2021.
Barb, the daughter of Sonny and Doris Culver, was born in 1948 in Algona. She grew up in Dickens and graduated from South Clay High School. She remained in Dickens, where she raised her family. For the last 30 years, she resided in Des Moines.

Ambassadors visit No Limits Archery Range

The Spencer Chamber Ambassadors were on hand Tuesday for the ribbon cutting at No Limits Archery Range. The indoor range, located next to Many Hands Market in south Spencer, is a membership-based range, owned by Andrew and Rachel Steffen, who also own No Limits Outdoors.
