Statewide biofuels standard

Friday, March 26, 2021

The Iowa Legislature is making a decision on the adoption of a statewide biofuels standard. As a farmer and consumer, I look to biodiesel as a way to improve our environment and our rural economies. Biodiesel is a renewable energy source that reduces greenhouse gases by up to 86%. This is a substantial contribution to improving our local environment. Having a biodiesel standard is a step forward in decreasing our carbon footprint and it supports nearly 4,000 jobs in our state.

As a soybean farmer, the use of biodiesel has improved the profitability of my farm, as well. The biodiesel industry adds about 13% to every bushel of soybeans I sell. In 2020, this resulted in a $1.17 per bushel. With the lower soybean prices over the past several years, the use of soybean oil in biodiesel adds certainty to a domestic market during otherwise downed economic times.

The states of Minnesota, Missouri and Illinois have biofuels standards that have been in place or are in the works right now. Minnesota has proven that biodiesel can continue to perform in cold weather.

I would encourage everyone to support any legislation that increases the use and availability of homegrown biodiesel.
