CCH hosting ‘Granny Basketball’ tournament
Clay County Heritage is inviting any former Six on Six basketball players to participate in an exhibition game as part of a Granny Basketball League tournament being held on Saturday, April 28 at the Spencer High School Field House. The exhibition game will be the culminating activity for the Granny Basketball tournament and is a part of the museum’s next exhibit, “The Starting Six,” set to open Feb. 27. An informational meeting for former Six on Six players will take place on Tuesday, Feb.13 at 5:30 p.m. at the Clay County Heritage Center.
The Granny Basketball league is comprised of women over the age of 50 who seek to preserve and promote the history of Six-on-Six basketball. The league plays by 1920s Six-on-Six rules, which includes no running or jumping as well as a strict no skin showing policy. In addition to league play, the Granny Basketball teams compete against other organizations or town teams. Over 300 women in eight different states are involved in the league, and around 30 Granny League players plan to attend the tournament on April 28.
CCH is hoping for a great turnout of local players to showcase the strong history of Six on Six in Clay County. If you have further questions regarding this activity or the exhibit, please contact Stephanie Horsley, director for Clay County Heritage Center, at 712-262-3304 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
