Rebels drop first match of season to Estherville

SIOUX RAPIDS — The Sioux Central Rebels opened their fall sports season with a volleyball match against the Estherville-Lincoln Central Midgets on Tuesday. The Rebels would lose the best of five match 3-1.

Tigers participate in rainy scrimmage

SPENCER — Friday the annual Spencer football scrimmage was played under rainy conditions. It was a chance for the Tigers to run some offense and defense under simulated conditions ahead of the season home opener against the Spirit Lake Indians Friday 7 p.m. at Dale Norton Field in Spencer. (Above) Riley DeWitt dropped back to pass during the scrimmage Friday night. The senior will take the signal calling reins for the Tigers this season.

Iowa Lakes volleyball competes at RPK Invite

BEATRICE, Neb. — The Lakers opened the 2022-23 season at Southeast Community College in Beatrice, Nebraska, this past weekend and jumped right into the fire. Expectations are high this year for the Lakers and the schedule has been set up to be a challenge and a grind.

Laker men open soccer campaign with back-to-back wins

COUNCIL BLUFFS — Iowa Lakes opened their 2022 season with back-to-back games over the weekend in Council Bluffs. The Lakers faced off against Otero College on Friday, winning 3-2. Going into the second half down 0-1, the boys from Iowa Lakes fought back, and a goal by freshman Wilmont Manneh in the 70th minute to even the score. Ten minutes later, sophomore Henry Tolbert found the back of the net to take the lead for the Lakers; and two minutes later, Otero scored to make the game 2-2.

Growing the game

ELKHORN, Neb. — Eight PGA Jr. League student golfers represented Spencer Golf & Country Club in postseason competitive events. After traveling to Fremont, Nebraska, at the end of July and finishing in the top four out of 16 teams, the group was invited to play in the Nebraska PGA Section Championship which took place on Aug. 13 at the Korn Ferry Tour’s Pinnacle Bank Championship in Elkhorn.

Laker volleyball to open season Friday

After 2 1/2 weeks of practice, workouts and a couple of scrimmages the 2022-23 regular season will officially open for the Iowa Lakes volleyball team on Friday at 11 a.m. versus Cloud County Community College in the Southeast Community College Tourney in Beatrice, Nebraska. The Lakers will follow that up with a 3 p.m. match versus Coffeyville Community College. The tournament will continue on Saturday with an 11 a.m. match against host, Southeast and a 3 p.m. match with Colby.

Iowa Lakes adds head women’s wrestling coach

ESTHERVILLE — The Iowa Lakes Community College Athletics Department added a women's wrestling program and selected the team's first head coach. Pending board approval, Corey Muniz will lead the new program as the search begins for qualified female wrestlers, with the program slated to start in July 2023.

Cross-country camp

Spencer Middle School and High School runners attended cross-country camp last week. Participants learned about proper running form, strength training, road safety, and proper nutrition and hydration. Tigges, Dirkx receive all-state recognition

SPENCER — The Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association recently announced its selections for all-state and academic all-state teams.

After having a solid season and peaking at the right time, advancing to a game within the state tournament. The Spencer Tigers would finish with a 19-9 (4-6) record, advancing to the Class 3A Substate final, before their season would end to the Sergent Bluff-Luton Warriors.

ILCC softball signs Goosmann

Iowa Lakes Community College head softball coach, Katie King, announced the signing of Madison Goosmann to the 2022-23 recruiting class. Goosmann is the daughter of Jay and Autumn Goosmann and is a graduate of Hinton High School in Hinton.

“We are very excited to welcome Madison and her family into our family,” King said. “Madison had an incredible senior season, and we are looking for her to continue this at Iowa Lakes.”

Record-setting win

SPENCER — After a rainy Saturday and Sunday morning, players were questioning if they would be able to finish the Northwest Amateur tournament without getting drenched in rain. The final pairing of the championship flight, featuring the guys in the mix for the win, got started at 3:30 p.m.
