Postseason begins

SPENCER — Six runs in the top of the sixth did the majority of the damage to the Spencer softball team at home Monday, leading ton a 9-0 shutout by No. 14 Sergeant Bluff-Luton. It was their 30th win of the season.

Tiger coach Tara Hauschen said, “Tough first inning was hard for us to recover from this game.”

0-2 headed into postseason

SPENCER — In the hitting battle, Spencer outhit Sergeant Bluff-Luton, 5-3, but the Warriors connected when it mattered Monday night to record the 2-0 win at Andy McGaffin Field. Despite strong pitching on both sides — Warriors pitchers struck out nine while the Tigers mowed down six — allowing SB-L to score its 26th win.

Raiders oust Sioux Central in extras

PETERSON — Two runs in the top of the 10th inning went unanswered by the Sioux Central girls in the bottom half, giving East Sac County the win in Peterson during Wednesday’s 2A Region 5 quarterfinal loss at home, 5-3. The Rebels, 16-11, were the favorites against the 12-14 Raiders.

SPIRIT LAKE — Tuesday, Spirit Lake put an end to the Sioux Central baseball season after failing to answer 16 Indian runs in the third and fourth innings in a 16-6 defeat in the Class 2A Substate 2 Quarterfinal.

Facing the host lineup in the bottom of the third, with a 4-0 lead, the Rebels gave up 11 runs to put themselves in a hole.

Wednesday, July 2 — Ruthven

Knights score sweep over SHS

ORANGE CITY — A doubleheader sweep by Unity Christian, Wednesday, resulted in Spencer’s 12th and 13th baseball losses as defensive struggles continue to plague the Tigers. The Knights scored 22 runs on the night, downing the visitors 10-4 and 12-2.

Big sixth puts game away

PETERSON — Ten runs in the sixth inning were just too much to overcome Thursday as Spencer got its 11th win of the year to even its record at .500 heading into the week. Traveling to nearby Peterson for a neighborly baseball contest with Sioux Central, the Tigers stopped the Rebels 16-1 behind the big inning.

Baseball team recognized for flood efforts

Recently, the Spencer baseball team was recognized with the Lee & Jeanie Toole Community Impact Award at the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association banquet. The Tiger boys were honored at the last home game at Andy McGaffin Field in front of the home crowd. Coaches and players stepped up to assist people and businesses in the aftermath of last summer’s historic floods.

Tigers pick up victory on the road

HULL — Jersey Vail had a single, a double and a home run with three RBIs, scoring twice helping Spencer softball team record a 12-7 win on the road at Western Christian. The Tigers amassed 16 hits in Hull.

HULL — Spencer pitcher-of-record Aaden Techen went wild in the field and behind the plate Monday, fanning 11 batters and giving up just two hits on the hill while recording a pair of hits and stealing three bags in the Tigers’ 9-0 shutout of host Western Christian in Hull.

Mercer dominates Rebel girls

NEWELL — Too much Anna Mercer was the difference in No. 3 Newell-Fonda’s 8-0 win, Monday night, at home against Sioux Central.

Third baseman Kamryn Snyder throws over the pitcher toward first base as the pitcher gets low for the Tigers. No individual statistics or comments were available. After traveling to Western Christian Monday, the Tiger ladies are off Tuesday before facing Ridge View and GT/RA in doubleheader action beginning at 6 p.m. in Ruthven. Thursday, Spencer will close out the softball week, the Tigers will face Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley in Boyden, at 6:45 p.m.
