Walter Slipke

Walter Lewis Slipke, 91, died peacefully in the presence of his children Sept. 17, 2023, at Lakes Regional Healthcare in Spirit Lake. Walt was born on Aug. 11, 1932, in Norton, Kansas, and grew up in the small town of New Almelo, Kansas, where he was known as Wally. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served honorably from 1951-54, including a deployment to the Korean War.

Clarence ‘Clip’ Schreuder

Clarence “Clip” W. Schreuder, 83, of Aurelia, passed away on Friday evening, Sept. 15, 2023, at Cherokee Specialty Care in Cherokee.

Betty Hamilton

Betty Louise Johnson Hamilton of New York City passed away at home on Sept. 14. She was born on Nov. 25, 1923, to Charles and Dessie Johnson on the family farm near Marathon.

She was predeceased by husband Arthur Hamilton in 1962; partner of 30 years Geoffrey Cobb Ryan in 2007; parents of Spencer; brother George Johnson; and sister Dorothy Vaubel.

Elvera 'Vera' Eckert

Funeral services for Elvera “Vera” Matilda (Gade) Eckert, 95, of Spencer, will be conducted at 2 p.m., Friday Sept. 29, 2023, at Christ the King Lutheran Church, in Spencer, Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at Rush Lake Cemetery in Spencer. Eckert passed away Friday, Sept. 22, 2023, at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer.

Arlene Benson

Arlene (Vos) Benson, the daughter of William and Artie Vos, was born Aug. 30, 1928, in New Sharon. Arlene taught school in a one room schoolhouse for several years. She met her husband when the school bus blocked the driveway and she was delayed for work. Arlene married that school bus driver (LaVern) on March 9, 1951, in New Sharon.

A celebration of life for Harold Piercy, 76, of Spencer, will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, 2023, at the VFW in Spencer. Rev. Tonna Parsons will officiate. Burial will be at 3 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2023, at Riverside Cemetery in Spencer. Piercy passed away Thursday, Aug. 31, 2023, at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer. Warner Funeral Home of Spencer is in charge of arrangements.

Funeral services for Edward Dennis Devereaux, 85, of Spencer, will be conducted at 10 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 23, 2023, at Warner Chapel in Spencer. Rev. Kevin Richter will officiate the service. Visitation will be at the funeral home in Spencer. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Spencer.

Joanne Tuttle

Graveside services for Jo Anne (Campbell) Tuttle, 96, of Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota, formerly of Wahpeton, will be conducted at 1 p.m., on Sept. 20, 2023, at Riverside Cemetery in Spencer. She passed away Saturday, Sept. 9, 2023, at Inver Grove Senior Living.

Jo Anne married Thomas Tuttle in 1952. They lived in Spencer. Their daughter, Jane Tuttle, was born in 1956, and in 1969, the family moved to Lake Okoboji in Wahpeton.

Russell Haugen

Russell Carl Haugen, son of Palmer and Alvina (Meyer) Haugen was born April 9, 1939, in Spencer. Russ received his education in Spencer. Following graduation in 1958 Russ enlisted in the Air Force.

On April 26, 1962, Russ was united in marriage to Sylvia Eilene Sanders in Lemar, Colorado. They were blessed with two children.

Geraldine “Gerry” Rabel

Funeral services for Geraldine “Gerry” Louise Rabel, 96, were conducted Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2023, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spencer. Rev. Kevin Richter officiated the service. Interment was conducted at Riverside Cemetery in Spencer.

Vernon “Doc” Walsh

Vernon “Doc” Walsh, of Lakefield, Minnesota, formerly of Webb, Iowa, passed away Sept. 3, 2023, in Worthington, Minnesota, with family at his side.

Karen Oestenstad

Karen Kay Miller Oestenstad, 73, died peacefully on Aug. 12, 2023.

Karen was born in Spencer on Dec. 20, 1949, to Walter Miller and Goldie (Utley) Miller. Her childhood years were spent in Ruthven where she grew up on a farm with her favorite pony, Jill, and participated in 4-H. During her high school years she played basketball and was majorette of the marching band.

Alfred Ness

Graveside services for Alfred Lavern Ness, 96, of Spencer, will be conducted at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2023, at Riverside Cemetery in Spencer. Rev. Shurmaine McAlpine will officiate the service. He passed away Friday, Sept. 1, 2023, at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer.

Alfred Lavern Ness was born March 19, 1927, in Bryant, South Dakota, to Lawrence and Ethyl Ness.

Sharon Faulkender

Sharon Kae Faulkender, the daughter of Charles and Goldie Wilson, was born Nov. 25, 1941, in Everly. Sharon was the youngest of five children. The family later moved to Excelsior Township where she attended grade school. In 1956 they moved to Harris-Lake Park where Sharon graduated high school in 1960. She went on to attend Omaha Business college for the next year. Sharon moved back to Spencer and was an administrative assistant for Bell Telephone.

Susan “Sue” Brennan

Memorial services for Susan “Sue” Kay Brennan, 62, of Spencer, will be conducted at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 7, 2023, at Warner Chapel in Spencer. Following the services, there will be a lunch served at the Spencer Municipal Golf Course. Interment will be at Odebolt Cemetery at a later date.

She passed away peacefully surrounded by her husband, Billy, her beloved dog, Mira, and other family on Thursday, Aug. 24, 2023, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
