Johnson honored as May Rotary Student

Evan Johnson was chosen as the Rotary Student of the Month for May. Johnson was recognized by Rotarian and Spencer Schools Administrator Elli Wiemers. He plans to go to University of Iowa in the fall and plans to pursue pre-med, he also graduated from Iowa Lakes Community College with an associates degree.

I-CASE recognizes Offerman, Meyer

Haley Offerman received the Scholarship in Special Education Leadership from the Iowa Council for Administrators of Special Education (I-CASE). Presenting the award is Chris Wells, I-CASE secretary and regional administrator at Prairie Lakes AEA.

Offerman is a special education consultant and chairperson of that department at Prairie Lakes AEA. She will transition to a new role with the agency this fall, facilitator of professional learning — internal/external.

BVU, Spencer Hospital connect through Strategic Partnership

STORM LAKE — Buena Vista University and Spencer Hospital have joined forces as Strategic Partners to strengthen their communities and the people they serve.

RiseFest announced latest lineup additions

SHELDON — RISE Ministries has announced the latest addition to the RiseFest 2022 lineup, Christian music artist Cade Thompson and speaker Adam Weber.

“Adding Cade and Adam to the lineup is such a blessing to an already amazing lineup,” Founder and President Rob Roozeboom said. “We can’t wait for RiseFest 2022.”

Catholic Charities lend a hand at GACO

A team from Catholic Charities visited the Grand Avenue Community Outreach and spent almost two hours working on various service projects alongside GACO’s local volunteer workforce. Other Catholic Charities members headed to Upper Des Moines to help with a backpack packing project during this same time. Time at GACO was spent primarily with His Hands Extended volunteers on our second floor stocking shelves of various non-perishable food items.

Ambassadors make it 2 for Tuesday

The Spencer Chamber Ambassadors had a busy week with two visits on Tuesday, June 7. They visited Flanagan State Bank (above) and Grand Retreat Salon and Spa (below). Flanagan State Bank, located at 502 Grand Ave., is a family-run community bank which has been In business for more than 100 years. They champion technology while still valuing a handshake. Taylor Swanson and Tyler Peterson are the Spencer representatives for this bank.

Clay recount delayed

In a special meeting Thursday afternoon, the Clay County Board of Supervisors approved an administrative recount for Tuesday’s primary election to be held this Friday. Initially meant for Thursday, the recount is necessary due to a vendor software issue at all five Spencer precinct locations.

Incumbent Rowley wins Iowa Senate District 5 primary

The unofficial results of Tuesday's primary election are in, with incumbent state Sen. Dave Rowley winning the Republican nomination for Iowa Senate District 5. He heads into November's general election unchallenged by a Democrat candidate.

The Spirit Lake native triumphed over David Dow to win his district's nomination with 3,402 votes, Dow receiving 1,631. He held onto the lead in Clay County as well, taking 155 votes over Dow's 62.

2022 Clay County Primary Election Results

With a total of 4,764 ballots cast in the race for the three seats open on the Clay County Board of Supervisors ballot, unofficially, Republican voters chose to return incumbent and board chair Barry Anderson to the November ticket along with newcomers Courtney DeLoss and Allen W. Batschelet.

Six GOP candidates sought the three open slots. Anderson garnered the most votes with 1,108, followed by DeLoss at 912 and Batschelet garnering 879.

Evans wins in Iowa Senate District 3 primary

The Iowa Senate District 3 primary election featured a battle with two legislative newcomers, with Lynn Evans winning the Republican nomination Tuesday night. The former school administrator and Buena Vista University instructor from Aurelia will enter the November general election unchallenged by any Democrat candidate for the district's senate seat.

The LOVE of the Irish

Irish eyes were smiling. When Gregg and Stephanie Ries were united in marriage Saturday in front of more than 100 family and friends, his Irish heritage played a prominent role in the ceremony and celebration.

The Irish-themed nuptials, which occurred at Oneota Cabin, included bag pipes, a poem, hand fasting — and of course — a kilt.

“Every clan in Ireland and Scotland had their own special color and pattern of their tartan and coat of arms,” Gregg said.

Garays become 224th Shayla Bee family

A small collection of motorcycles followed by a caravan of vehicles rumbled into Scharnberg Park Saturday shortly after 5 p.m. as Shayla Bee welcomed its 224th family, the Garay’s, of Spencer. They met the family at the open shelter house. In May, the Shayla Bee Board received a nomination from Bobbie Perez for the Hector and Kristen Garay family, of Spencer. The couple’s new baby boy, Luka, was born 10 weeks premature. He was born septic, with pneumonia and was vented.

UDMO board announces Edwards as new executive director

The Upper Des Moines Opportunity Inc. board of directors announced Julie Edwards as the organization’s new executive director. Edwards began her executive director duties in April 2022 as an experienced leader in community action. She brings to the position 27 years as a progressive leader, first as the UDMO Early Childhood Programs coordinator in the Spencer Early Childhood Center and most recently, as the UDMO Early Childhood Programs director.

'Sound of Music' fills Arts on Grand

It was a night of Broadway classics at Arts on Grand last Friday. In collaboration with the gallery, Coffee Beanz Theatre Group (above) performed a series of iconic musical theatre numbers in "Ten Minutes Ago: A Rodgers & Hammerstein Cabaret.” The show starred Spencer High School alumni Natalie Kroll (right) and Ryan Busch, and featured Chandler Todd (below), Kyle Goeken and Makenna Pierce.
