Fairgoers have the opportunity to save big through several pre-fair deals as they make plans to attend the Clay County Fair, Sept. 10-18.

“We know people in today’s economy are looking for ways to save money,” fair manager Jeremy Parsons said. “Taking advantage of these pre-fair discounts is the perfect way to do that.”

Smoky Mountain Railroad exhibit turns 75

Regular attendees of the Clay County Fair may be familiar with the Smoky Mountain Railroad train station in The Depot building. What they may not realize is this year, the exhibit will be 75 years old, and a great deal of work has gone into its upkeep over the years.

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling that established abortion as a constitutional right.

Sioux Rapids area residents invited to fiber internet open house

Both rural and town residents of the Sioux Rapids area are invited to an informational meeting, July 13, to learn about the fiber project set to bring residents ultra-fast internet, according to Roxanne White, general manager of Evertek, the company who is building the network. The meeting is come and go and will run from 5-7 p.m. at the American Legion in Sioux Rapids.

Sacred Heart celebrates 150th anniversary

As part of its 150th anniversary celebration over the weekend, Spencer’s Sacred Heart Catholic Church brought in a number of inflatables and food trucks to its location last Friday for a family fun night. Kids enjoyed the evening bouncing inside the inflatable houses, sliding down the slides and trying their hand at inflatable ax throwing.

Muni Band goes to the movies

The Spencer Municipal Band, under the direction of co-director Katie Bush, welcomes everyone to join them for another concert of band music Thursday, June 30, at 7:30 p.m. at the bandshell at East Leach Park. This will be the fourth in a series of six concerts the band will present.

Fletcher part of award-winning team

AMES — A team of fifth-year Iowa State University landscape architecture students won the 2022 Confluence Inc. Landscape Architecture Studio Prize awarded by the Department of Landscape Architecture in the ISU College of Design. Among the team, Spencer High School graduate, Olivia Fletcher.

Hoffmeyer named Cady Award of Merit recipient

At the Iowa Judges Association Annual Meeting on June 23, Third Judicial District Senior Judge Duane E. Hoffmeyer was announced as the recipient of the Iowa Judges Association 34th Chief Justice Mark Cady Annual Award of Merit. The award is given “in recognition of his dedication, skill, distinguished service and extraordinary efforts for the betterment of the Iowa Judiciary.” It was presented by Iowa Chief Justice Susan Larson Christensen.

Outdoors: Help fight the spread of invasive species

Gov. Kim Reynolds recently proclaimed June as Invasive Species Awareness Month in Iowa.

Iowa woodlands, wildlands and waterways draw hundreds of thousands of tourists and recreational users each year. Much of the spread of Invasive species comes from people simply enjoying nature. Uninvited guests can hitch a ride on outdoor gear, shoes and clothes, traveling hundreds of miles in a single day.

Survey results confirmed what Iowa pheasant hunters already knew — pheasant hunting last fall was really good. In fact, it was the best in more than a decade. Iowa hunters bagged an estimated 375,000 roosters in 2021, the most since 2008.

Outdoors: Fishing seminar set for Okoboji Blue Water Festival

The final piece of the puzzle has come together for the 2022 Okoboji Blue Water Festival scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 13, in Preservation Plaza at the Arnolds Park Amusement Park. First came the announcement of Chad Pregracke as the keynote speaker, next came headliner Melissa Etheridge for the evening concert and now professional walleye angler Keith Kavajecz has agreed to share his fishing expertise at the 10 a.m. fishing seminar.

Time to brew and sip

The Home Wine and Craft Beer Department will include 15 divisions in the wine category and nine divisions in the craft beer category for the 2022 Clay County Fair, Sept. 10-18.

Facing homelessness

Several community nonprofit agencies, law enforcement administrators and health care representatives met Tuesday morning in the Clay County Board of Supervisors chambers to talk about the problems they’re seeing with homelessness in the county and what each agency can do going forward.
