Evening Shade’s Lodge rededicated on 150th anniversary

Evening Shade No. 312 rededicated its Lodge and its charter commemorating the 150th anniversary. In January of 1872, eight Spencer men submitted articles of organization to the Grand Lodge of Iowa after being recommended by Prudence Lodge of Algona to raise Evening Shade Lodge No. 312. On June 5, 1872, Grand Lodge granted the Charter.

Supervisors updated on carbon pipelines

The possibility of carbon pipelines being constructed through Clay County has been a heavy discussion among landowners and county officials for almost a year. During their Tuesday meeting, the Clay County Board of Supervisors received a project update from representatives of the companies looking to construct the pipelines, Summit Carbon Solutions and Navigator Heartland Greenway.

Fireworks to light the Spencer skies on 4th

Thanks to the ongoing collection of contributions from local businesses, nonprofits and private donors, the Spencer Fourth of July fireworks show will light up the skies over the Clay County Fairgrounds beginning at approximately 10 p.m., Monday. The parking lot on the grounds and the grassy area around the grounds will also be open. Guests are asked not to bring private fireworks onto the fairgrounds to help prevent extra clean-up for the fair staff afterward.

The IRRMA plans the first Music Camp at Arnolds Park

ARNOLDS PARK — The first annual Iowa Rock Music Camp at Arnolds Park is scheduled July 26-28, in and around the Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame & Museum. Targeted toward middle school and high school students, there will be morning and afternoon sessions depending upon age group and/or program interest.

Spirit of Harmony Chorus featured in OST pre-show

OKOBOJI — The Spirit of Harmony Chorus will present pre-show entertainment under the awning at 7:30 p.m., Friday, July 15, before the Okoboji Summer Theatre production of An Inspector Calls. Celebrating their recent regional first place competition results, the Spirit of Harmony Chorus is excited to share their harmony with OST audiences again. The chorus, a chapter of Sweet Adelines International, is directed by Judy Weipert and assistant director Marcia Klingbeil.

Chad Plueger is their regional manager and his son, Jordan Plueger, is the regional sales manager. Make plans, save big with CCF deals

Fairgoers have the opportunity to save big through several pre-fair deals as they make plans to attend the Clay County Fair, Sept. 10-18.

“We know people in today’s economy are looking for ways to save money,” fair manager Jeremy Parsons said. “Taking advantage of these pre-fair discounts is the perfect way to do that.”

Smoky Mountain Railroad exhibit turns 75

Regular attendees of the Clay County Fair may be familiar with the Smoky Mountain Railroad train station in The Depot building. What they may not realize is this year, the exhibit will be 75 years old, and a great deal of work has gone into its upkeep over the years.

US Supreme Court overturns right to abortion

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling that established abortion as a constitutional right.

Sioux Rapids area residents invited to fiber internet open house

Both rural and town residents of the Sioux Rapids area are invited to an informational meeting, July 13, to learn about the fiber project set to bring residents ultra-fast internet, according to Roxanne White, general manager of Evertek, the company who is building the network. The meeting is come and go and will run from 5-7 p.m. at the American Legion in Sioux Rapids.

Sacred Heart celebrates 150th anniversary

As part of its 150th anniversary celebration over the weekend, Spencer’s Sacred Heart Catholic Church brought in a number of inflatables and food trucks to its location last Friday for a family fun night. Kids enjoyed the evening bouncing inside the inflatable houses, sliding down the slides and trying their hand at inflatable ax throwing.

Muni Band goes to the movies

The Spencer Municipal Band, under the direction of co-director Katie Bush, welcomes everyone to join them for another concert of band music Thursday, June 30, at 7:30 p.m. at the bandshell at East Leach Park. This will be the fourth in a series of six concerts the band will present.

Fletcher part of award-winning team

AMES — A team of fifth-year Iowa State University landscape architecture students won the 2022 Confluence Inc. Landscape Architecture Studio Prize awarded by the Department of Landscape Architecture in the ISU College of Design. Among the team, Spencer High School graduate, Olivia Fletcher.

Iowa Project celebrates 2nd anniversary with Community Day

Hoffmeyer named Cady Award of Merit recipient

At the Iowa Judges Association Annual Meeting on June 23, Third Judicial District Senior Judge Duane E. Hoffmeyer was announced as the recipient of the Iowa Judges Association 34th Chief Justice Mark Cady Annual Award of Merit. The award is given “in recognition of his dedication, skill, distinguished service and extraordinary efforts for the betterment of the Iowa Judiciary.” It was presented by Iowa Chief Justice Susan Larson Christensen.
