MILFORD — Milford Family Care of Spencer Hospital has initiated recruitment for a new primary care provider for the community’s family medicine clinic.

The hospital recently announced that the clinic’s current provider, advanced registered nurse practitioner Jamie Billings, will be transitioning from Milford Family Care to Hartley Family Care later this summer.

Now is a perfect time to begin sorting through all of the photos you have taken and enter them in one of the many photography competitions at the 2022 Clay County Fair, Sept. 10-18.

“We’re really excited to be back for the 2022 Fair,” said Dana Metcalf, superintendent of the Photography Department. “We’re excited to have eight new sponsored theme classes, including new for the 2022 Fair, ‘Batter Up.'”

The board of trustees for Drainage District 37 in Clay County met last Tuesday to arrive at a drainage assessment for landowners in the district. The amount assessed was $697,911, and it will go out in the fall with property taxes.

Board member Allen McGranahan clarified the landowners’ assessment is money that has already been incurred, which should have been assessed in the past and wasn’t.

The rehabilitation project for the Spencer Municipal Airport’s Terminal Building is underway, but some recent developments required action from the Spencer Airport Board. During their meeting on Monday, the board gave its approval to allow the Spencer city manager to authorize a change order in the near future.

The Clay County Board of Supervisors have been discussing the process of making broadband connections more widely available in the county. During their meeting on Tuesday, the board approved a request for proposal document to solicit proposals from local providers to establish broadband in unprovided areas using some of the county’s funds from the American Rescue Plan Act.

ARNOLDS PARK — The Iowa Rock 'n Roll Music Association announced that enrollment starts June 15 for the 2022 Iowa Rocks Talent Contest.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The following students have been named to the president's list or earned academic honors for the spring 2022 semester. The president's list recognizes full-time (12-plus credits), degree-seeking students who earn a semester GPA of 3.5 or higher. Academic honors acknowledges degree-seeking students enrolled in six to 11 credits with a semester GPA of 3.5 or higher. Locals on the list include Emma Larson, of Spencer, president's list.

CMBA Architects is pleased to announce that Levi Brausey has joined their staff. Brausey is a Spencer native and is joining our Spencer office as an architectural designer. He received his Bachelor of Architecture from South Dakota State University. While at SDSU, Brausey gained experience through his courses and completed his internship with CMBA last year.

On June 14, the Spencer Chamber Ambassadors gathered at Drivensole, located at 8 W. Fifth St., in Spencer. This new bohemian/vintage style clothing store is owned by entrepreneur sisters Abby Rutledge and Lisa Raper. They carry kids clothing and women’s up to size 3X. They also offer Kringle’s Pretzels in a wide variety of flavors and unique accessories and gift items. In the future, this business will also feature Lisa Nichole Photography.

BOOKED INTO THE CLAY COUNTY JAIL

ROSSIE — A Clay County Sheriff’s Office investigation dating back to New Year’s Day led to the arrest of Stacy Baas, 56, of Rossie. The sheriff’s office received a report in December 2021 of alleged sexual abuse dating back to Jan. 1, 2016.

SIOUX CITY — Michaela Feldmann, regional communications lead, with MercyOne, based in Sioux City, issued a statement regarding Hartley Community Memorial Health Center announced transfer of operations from MercyOne to Spencer Hospital later this summer.

Saturday's early morning showers were a concern for some as organizers prepared to host an outdoor open house from 10 a.m. to noon at The Narrows Preserve that day. However, by 9:30 a.m., the showers were gone, and visitors to the open house were greeted by overcast skies and mild temperatures, fit for informal walking tours of the recently purchased 50-acre tract of land. The property features 2,020 feet of East Lake Okoboji's last undeveloped shoreline.

Gardeners are encouraged to enter their blue ribbon best in the Fields and Gardens Department at the 2022 Clay County Fair, Sept. 10-18. One of the fair’s original competitive departments, will yet again have another great year of showing.

“Even with the cool spring and all the challenges with the weather we are still hopeful for a good turn out on produce and exhibits for fair,” Fields and Gardens superintendent Jerry Groenewold said.
