Special days to highlight 2022 Clay County Fair

No matter who you are, there is something for everyone at the 2022 Clay County Fair, Sept. 10-18.

“Each day the fair is chock full of activities for all ages,” fair manager Jeremy Parsons said. “However, some activities are scheduled only on a special day, which makes each day at the Fair a very unique experience.”

Council approves floodplain study from Snyder & Associates

With recommendation from the Finance Committee, the Spencer City Council approved a floodplain study from Snyder & Associates at the city council meeting on Monday. The purpose of the study is to shrink the floodplain affecting Green Industrial Park

A study from the Federal Emergency Management Agency from November 2021 shows the floodplain in the Green Industrial Park area increasing in size by November of this year.

Hearing date to restore trailer park power scheduled

An injunction hearing to restore the power at the trailer park located on West 18th Street has been scheduled to take place on Aug. 2, allowing for a full day of proceedings. Until then, the power at the trailer park will remain off.

Sewer extension project passes public hearing

An extension to the city sewer system on 25th Street and 11th Avenue Southwest made it through a public hearing during Spencer’s City Council meeting on Monday. Since the project cleared the public hearing hurdle, it will proceed with a letting date on July 28 and a hearing date for plans and specifications on Aug. 1.

Community concert to celebrate 30 years at Arnolds Park

ARNOLDS PARK — The Northwest Iowa Concert Band, directed by Rich Nicklay, will present their annual summer concert Sunday, July 24, 2 p.m., at the Arnolds Park Amusement Park Majestic Pavilion. This will be the 30th anniversary of the band performing a summer concert at the park. The band is made up of volunteers from area communities, including Armstrong, Emmetsburg, Estherville, Lake Park, Milford, Ringsted, Spirit Lake and Swea City.

Trinity Lutheran children enjoy Rocket Slide art

Young people attending Trinity Preschool’s summer care program spent time coloring the Rocket Slide page art in last Wednesday’s Northwest Iowa Shopper. In celebration of the anticipated reopening of the legendary, refurbished Rocket Slide in East Leach Park, the Shopper is including a weekly fun page in honor of the long-awaited project returning the iconic landmark to a Spencer park. Iowa Lakes named Military Spouse Friendly

ESTHERVILLE — Iowa Lakes Community College has earned the 2022-23 Military Spouse Friendly School designation for providing exceptional educational opportunities and support services to the spouses and families of those who have served or are currently serving in the armed forces.

ILCC student places at BPA Conference

ESTHERVILLE — One hard-working Iowa Lakes Community College student, Jessica Walker, placed second in her division at the 2022 Business Professionals of America National Conference held in Dallas, Texas. Walker joined over 6,000 conference delegates representing 25 states and Puerto Rico to compete nationally in business skills competitions, workshops, and general sessions.

Okoboji Bible Conference to feature I Am They, Matthew West

ARNOLDS PARK — The 2022 Okoboji Bible Conference kicks off with a full weekend of concerts:

• Friday, July 29, 7:15 p.m. — Southern gospel trio The Booth Brothers, will start things off with a pre-conference concert at the conference ground’s tabernacle.

Business Brief: Juza earns certificate from Consumer Credit School

Jessica Juza, personal banker with Northwest Bank in Spencer, successfully completed the Iowa Bankers Association Consumer Credit School in Ankeny. The school is an intense one-week program sponsored by the Iowa Bankers Association.

Weighing in on Roe v. Wade

Two opposing view points let their voices be heard Saturday morning as the outcome of the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in the Roe v. Wade case made its way to downtown Spencer. A noticeable presence by the Spencer Police Department ensured the march was undisturbed and there was no trouble.

Iowa economic director tours YMCA during Spencer visit

The Spencer community was visited by Debi Durham, director of the Iowa Economic Development Authority, Friday. Durham met with city officials and business leaders, and toured facilities such as Spencer's YMCA.

Families celebrate Royal Fun Days

Clay County residents celebrated Royal Fun Days over the weekend with a variety of family-oriented activities. Kids enjoyed bouncing on a set of inflatables and receiving unique balloon creations. Chamber searching for board nominations

The Spencer Chamber of Commerce Board is currently seeking nominations for three upcoming seat openings on the board. Board members can serve up to two three-year terms.

State auditor discusses Clean School Bus Program

Through its Public Innovations and Efficiency Program, the Office of Auditor of State has been on the lookout for money saving mechanisms and believes it has found one in the Clean School Bus Program. State Auditor Rob Sand held a news conference Monday morning to provide information about the program and its potential to beat high gas prices.
