Local author, Vicky Treimer is announcing the release of her second book, “Horse Hitches, Draymen and Ice Houses: The History of Moneta, Iowa” which is an in-depth historical account of Moneta from 1879-2000. Treimer will appear at the Spencer Public Library on March 22, at 10 a.m.

WEST OKOBOJI — West O Beer, located in West Okoboji, has announced plans to host a Puzzle Race to benefit the Humane Society of Northwest Iowa. The event is scheduled for Saturday, April 12, and will feature three races beginning at 1 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 5 p.m.

The 1 p.m. race is family-friendly, with soda being offered in place of beer for those underage.

Milford Police say an intoxication and vandalism investigation escalated to a charge of terrorism just after midnight on Sunday, March 16. 
Officers were dispatched to the 1200 block of L Avenue near Harbor of Joy Lutheran Church in Milford, for an altercation between two men who were fighting in the church parking lot. Upon arrival, police encountered 34-year-old Paul K. Davis of Milford who was allegedly intoxicated and yelling loudly.

As the elected state legislators are debating issues in Des Moines which impact the state as a whole, the divide between state and local control is a talking point for both sides of the debate. While the two are on the same page when it comes to the representatives and the local government, questions remain regarding who has the final say when it comes to area finances.

“Local control in Iowa is kind of a myth,” state Rep. John Wills, of District 10, said.

At approximately 11:31, the Spencer Fire Department was dispatched to the tree dump site for a blaze in the stump pile, creating a Clay Alert and closing the location until Friday morning. Upon arrival, there was a well-established fire in the center of the pile.

Once a year, the many nonprofits of Clay County get their time in the limelight after all the hard work they do each and every day.

The Clay County Community Foundation recognized a number of organizations and individuals last Thursday, March 13.

WASHINGTON — U.S. Rep. Randy Feenstra, R-Hull, announced that high school students across Iowa’s 4th Congressional District are invited to submit their artwork for the 2025 Congressional Art Competition. This competition is conducted by members of the U.S. House of Representatives to encourage students from across the country to express their artistic talents.

MILFORD — A Cherished Daughters Dance, hosted on Sunday, June 1, from 5:30-8:30 p.m., by the Cherish Center at the Roof Garden Ballroom and Arnolds Park Amusement Park property.

An integral part of the service organization’s community, the Cherished Daughters Dance provides an evening of intentional investment in a girl’s life from her father or a positive male role model. Daughters, along with their fathers/male role models, create memories.

The Spencer City Council is considering a proposed budget for fiscal year 2026. The budget features a modest increase in the city property tax levy, a focus on maintaining essential community services, and recovery from the devastating June 22, 2024, flood.

Avenue of Flags, of Spencer, is currently accepting flags for dedication. Flags can be ordered for a family member or friend who served in the armed forces, and has passed away. The authors of a new study of emergency medical services available to Clay County residents are recommending that taxpayers at least partially fund a second full-time ambulance and a full-time EMS coordinator as part of a larger plan to improve the countywide emergency medical services system.

Northwest Iowa is likely in for some wild weather swings between Friday and Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

Free community meals will return, beginning Monday, March 17, as twice a week events, similar to the ones formerly served in the Grand Avenue Community Outreach dining room, resume in the refurbished former Pizza Hut at the South T in Spencer. The meals will be served from 5-6:30 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays each week.

• Michael Meister, 27, of Plainfield, was arrested at 2:07 a.m., March 12, at 495th Street and 125th Avenue in Peterson. Allegedly, Meister was found to have marijuana and drug paraphernalia located inside of the vehicle, which was found during a probable cause search. Mesiter was charged and transported to the Clay County Jail, where he was charged with possession of a controlled substance, marijuana, third offense; possession of drug paraphernalia; and speeding.
