The California gold rush had panned out well for John Augustine Kirchner, but it had petered out which is how the 27-year-old German immigrant had found himself wandering through the nearly endless sea of grass that was northwest Iowa in 1856.  

Lakers walks costly in loss to Bears

BOONE -- Iowa Lakes Community College watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in a 7-0 loss to Des Moines Area Community College on Monday. The Bears scored on a walk by Cael Boever, a sacrifice fly by Nick Ripa, a walk by Cy Patterson, and a walk by Gage Franck in the first inning.

Gary Tolzmann

A celebration of life for Gary Tolzmann, 77, of Spencer, will be conducted at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, April 16, 2022, at the Clay County Regional Events Center, 800 W. 18th St., Spencer. Tate Allen McCarty

Tate Allen McCarty was born to Alesha and Evan McCarty, of Linn Grove, on March 24, 2022, at Spencer Hospital. The baby boy weighed 6 pounds, 11 ounces at birth. Grandparents are: Allen Javotle McCarty, of Spencer; and Ron and Susan Sikora, of Ruthven. Tate is welcomed home by big brother, Kal.

7 GOP candidates vie for 3 supervisor positions

Seven candidates will seek one of three open positions on the Clay County Board of Supervisors in the June 7 primary election. Each candidate filed as a Republican on the ticket. There are no Democrats on the supervisors ballot.

Spencer man sentenced for felony mischief, assault

A Spencer man who was found guilty of felony criminal mischief and assault causing bodily injury was sentenced on March 25 to 45 days of nonconsecutive jail time and two years of parole.
District Court Judge John Sandy sentenced 34-year-old Corey McGuire on the two charges stemming from an incident in January 2020.

Gary Orris

Funeral services for Gary Orris, 81, of Spencer, will be conducted at a later date. Orris passed away Wednesday, March 23, 2022, at his residence in Spencer. Warner Funeral Home of Spencer is in charge of arrangements.

Dennis Bortvit

A celebration of life for Dennis A. Bortvit, 70, will be conducted from 2-6 p.m., Saturday, March 26, 2022, at Holy Cross of the Resurrection Chapel, 3205 335th Ave. (West side of Lost Island Lake) in Ruthven. Bortvit passed away March 14, 2022.

Tolzmann, former Citizen of the Year, passes away at 77

Spencer has lost of a pillar of the community with the death of Gary Tolzmann. He passed away Wednesday evening, March 23, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Tolzmann, who retired as president of Farmers Trust & Savings Bank in 2007, was honored as Spencer's 1994 Citizen of the Year for his many contributions to the community. Before and after his retirement, he was involved in a wide array of community boards and service organizations.

County supervisors consider paying for trail project's engineering

**Engineer hired for proposed pipeline projects
The vision of the Iowa Great Lakes Connection Trail, which would connect Spencer's trail system to Dickinson County's, has been in development for several years. To move the project along, the Clay County Board of Supervisors discussed using county funds to cover the project's engineering cost during its Tuesday meeting.

Bennett Ames Boyer

Bennett Ames Boyer was born to Wes and Kelsie Boyer, of Spencer, on March 20, 2022, at Spencer Hospital. The baby girl weighed 6 pounds, 12 ounces at birth. Grandparents are: Greg and Kristy Mills, of Hartley; and Neil and Lori Boyer, of Cedar Falls. Bennett was welcomed home by big sister, Bradie, and big brother, Bryant.

Truman Douglas Hoaglund

Truman Douglas Hoaglund was born to Naethan and Morgan Hoaglund, of Hartley, on March 18, 2022, at Spencer Hospital. The baby boy weighed 7 pounds, 4 ounces at birth. Grandparents are: Doug and Cindy Hoaglund, of Hartley; and Steve and Brenda Zenor, of Alton.

**Friends rally in remembrance of Sully
On a busy Saturday morning, cars lined up in the Southpark Mall parking lot just before noon in remembrance of Sully McGuire. McGuire lost his eight-year battle to cancer in December 2020, leaving a hole in the hearts of his family and the friends he left behind. Two of his closest friends and classmates, Zander Mozena and Dylan Samsel, have chosen to remember him the last two years by coordinating a car rally in his memory.

Riner Scott Meyer

Riner Scott Meyer was born to Randy and Rachel Meyer, of Everly, on March 17, 2022, at Spencer Hospital. The baby boy weighed 7 pounds, 12 ounces at birth. Grandparents are: Bradley and Theresa Proctor, of Pocahontas; and Roger and Susan Meyer, of Everly. Riner is welcomed home by big sister, Ada.

Hargens named to 2nd team

Sioux Central junior Jacob Hargens was named 2nd Team All-State in Class 2A by the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association. Hargens had a historic junior season averaging 25.5 points per game, good for second in all of Class 2A, and 9.9 rebounds per game. His 535 points this season set a single-season school record, Hargens also holds the school records for career points with 1,298 and career rebounds with 589.

Ambassadors visit Windcrest Village

The Spencer Chamber Ambassadors visited Windcrest Village on Tuesday to meet with Amanda Muller, property manger, and Michael Sorenson, Iowa director for Express Property Management, which operates the apartment complex. There are 187 units in the market-rate complex, with the first units completed in 2017. With a community room, park, fitness center and other amenities, the complex has apartments and townhouse units in sizes from studios to four bedrooms.
