SPENCER — Four firsts and six seconds helped Spencer to spit with Carroll and Storm Lake St. Edmonds at Senior Night in the Spencer Family YMCA, Tuesday. The Tigers fell by six to Carroll 50-44, while downing Bishop Garrigan, 69-24.

Tiger coach Jesse Kuehler said, “We had a good meet overall and enjoyed celebrating our seniors this evening and the leadership they have brought to the team.”

SPENCER — Excellent defense by the Spencer girls basketball team held Emmetsburg to 41 points, but ice cold shooting proved a roadblock. The Tigers failed to reach double-digit scoring in any quarter, finishing with six or less in three frames in the 41-25 loss, Monday.

Spencer’s Cael Bruning tossed in 23 as the Tigers defeated Emmetsburg by 2, 56-54, Monday. Key to the win was a pair of quarters where the E-Hawks didn’t reach 10 points. The Tigers, now 2-1, are in action Friday against Cherokee on the road; then will battle Bonderant-Farrarr in the Wells Fargo Arena, Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Spencer is back home to close out 2024 in a nightcap against South Central Calhoun.

SPENCER BOYS BASKETBALL

SIOUX RAPIDS — Ten points separated Sioux Central and Alta-Aurelia as the Rebels started the sweep. The home team captured a 53-43 win Tuesday.

Rebel coach Kasey Krager said, “It was kind of a back and forth game in the first half with both teams struggling to find offensive rhythm. We were down by 1 point at half and erased that and played with a lead for most of the second half.”

SWEA CITY — Five Rebels had perfect nights, helping Sioux Central sweep three conference schools Tuesday. The Rebels downed West Bend-Mallard, 48-24; Pocahontas, 47-30; and host North Union, 46-18.

“The guys showed amazing heart,” said Chance Rice, Rebel boys coach. “Second match into the day we lost one of our own to injury and it took a lot for everyone to refocus. We bounced back and left everything on the mat for our guy.”

SIOUX RAPIDS — Sioux Central defended its home court Tuesday night, downing the visiting Alta-Aurelia 63-51, the second contest in Rebel-Warrior double header. Leading by just 3 points at the break, Sioux Central opened things up in the third quarter, and won a fourth quarter shootout 22-20.

“We took a tough loss to Okoboji,” Tiger girls coach Dave Storm said, “the score really is deceiving when you look at it. As a team we wrestled pretty well winning six out of the nine matches that we wrestled. As a team we wrestled pretty well. We are young but we can see progress every time they get on the mat.”

GRAETTINGER ― The Spencer boys wrestling team kicked off its 2024-25 season Thursday night at Graettinger where they participated in a double duel with GTRA and Okoboji. A 2-0 start is just what the doctor ordered as they downed the Pioneers in a good battle, 39-32, before sneaking past home team GTRA, 42-39

MILFORD — Neither Spencer girls or Sioux Central’s coed squads brought full teams to Okoboji/HMS Invitational in Milford, Saturday; but the Tiger women were able to bring the team title back to Spencer.

SPENCER — Finishing with 12 3-pointers for the game, Spencer’s girls used a big second quarter, following a very disappointing first, to help secure a win over former Lakes foe Western Christian, 71-64, in the Tigers gym Thursday night.

Matt Stevenson, Tiger coach, said, “We caught lightning in a bottle in the second quarter and scored 32 points which included seven 3s.”

SIOUX CITY — The Spencer boys wrestling team made its annual journey to its annual trip to Longlines Center in Sioux City to participate in the Sergeant Bluff-Luton Invitational. This tournament fielded 19 teams from across Iowa, South Dakota and Nebraska.

Levi Johnson, at 157 pounds placed a top the podium, the lone Spencer wrestler to do so, going 4-0 on the grid day in the first tourney of his senior campaign.

STORM LAKE — Hunter Cooper, Daune McGregor and Connor Brown were perfect Thursday night at Storm Lake, but that didn't help against their hosts, the Tornadoes, or the powerhouse squad from Emmetsburg, a Twin Lakes Conference foe. The shorthanded Rebels fell to Storm Lake, 48-30, and fell to the E-Hawks, 42-17.

Despite the losses to a pair of tough schools, Rebel coach Chance Rice said his squad is “showing promise.”

NEWELL — It was a bad first half all the way around for the Sioux Central girls and boys, Thursday evening, and that’s all Newell-Fonda needed in a pair of lopsided losses on the road.
