No injuries reported in semi-van collision

On Thursday, no injuries, despite approximately $35,000 in damages, were reported following a van and semi collision near the intersection of 11th Street SW and the parking entry west of Walmart.

Ambassadors on hand for Rotary presentation to UDMO

The Spencer Chamber Ambassadors joined Upper Des Moines Opportunity and Spencer Rotary Club on Thursday for a check presentation.The Spencer Rotarians applied for a grant from Rotary International's Disaster Relief Fund to aid with flood relief efforts, and were awarded $25,000. They worked with UDMO to purchase new refrigerators and other food pantry items. UDMO lost all their equipment in the flood, so this grant was a tremendous help.

SHS fall musical opens Friday night

Spencer High School’s Larry M. Untiet Theatre transforms into the world of Broadway with the hit musical “Guys and Dolls,” Nov. 15-17. The show is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start both Friday and Saturday, anchored by a 2 p.m. matinee Sunday to wrap everything up.

“Our students have done an amazing job with the production,” said Cara Gerlock, director of the production.

Sharing Tree grows at Iowa State Bank

RUTHVEN — Iowa State Bank’s Christmas tradition continues to grow as the Sharing Tree returns to the lobby of Iowa State Bank in Ruthven beginning Nov. 29. Area community bands present holiday concert

ESTHERVILLE — The Northwest Iowa Concert Band, directed by Rich Nicklay, and the Northwest Iowa Jazz Band, directed by Scott Benjamin, will present a holiday concert, Monday, Nov. 18, at 7:30 p.m. at Estherville VFW.

The Clay County Long Term Recovery Group announced the hiring of three key staff members who will lead and support the county's ongoing disaster recovery initiatives following the June 22 flood.

DES MOINES — Sen. Lynn Evans, R-Aurelia, was elected on Tuesday as an assistant majority leader by his colleagues for the 91st General Assembly.

Drive-thru Food Distribution Saturday

Those directly impacted by the mid-June flood, in-and-out of Clay County, are invited to the Drive-thru Food Distribution effort, a partnership between Spencer’s Foundation Church and Convoy of Hope outreach, will be in the parking lot near the Clay County Regional Events Center, in Spencer. The distribution will be conducted from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 16. The giveaway will include a box of food designed to feed a family of four from four to five days.

Busse, Specketer finalists for 3A appointment

Clay County Assistant Attorney Kristi Busse and Elizabeth Specketer, the assistant attorney general, were selected from a small pool of nominees to interview with Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds. The 3A District Judicial Nominating Commission met on Nov. 7, selected Busse, from Spencer, and Specketer, from Rembrandt, as nominees for the district associate judge vacancy created by appointment of the honorable Andrew Smith to the District Court bench.

Ward is October Rotary Student of the Month

Grant Ward was presented the October Student of the Month Award by Rotary President Joe Weber at Monday’s meeting. School counselor Lisa DeWitt, who was present at the announcement, said, “Grant is that he is a kind and caring human being.” Ward is the student body president; 2024 homecoming king; National Honor Society Chapter VP; cross county and golf athlete; band member; active in his church; large group speech and theater participant.

ILCC announces open house for Veterans Center

ESTHERVILLE — Iowa Lakes Community College is hosting an open house for its Center of Excellence for Veteran Student Success on Nov. 22 from 9-11 a.m.

Community members, veterans and their families are warmly invited to attend, tour the Center, meet the Veterans Center staff and explore the resources available to support veterans transitioning to civilian life.

Local physician receives honorary degree

Amanda Elaine Young, DO, a family physician in Spencer, has achieved the Degree of Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the national medical association representing nearly 127,600 family physicians, residents and medical students.
