The year was 1979. Greyhound buses came through Spencer and would stop on the north side of the Tangney Hotel. Passengers would get off and make their way to the coffee shop. Though the coffee shop was small, it had a counter with several stools and two and four seater booths. Located on the east end of the Tangney, patrons could look out the large windows and take in what Spencer had to offer.
In 1981, according to the city directory, there were: 12 gas stations, 15 restaurants, five men's clothing stores and 15 women's clothing stores. North Gate and Southpark Malls were both open as Iowa Lakes Community College had not taken over the North Gate fully. Remember the North Y Cafe with juke boxes by the tables and another by the entrance door, Elfredos, Eddie Quinn and Ellerbroeks to name a few?
Throughout the past 35 years, businesses have relocated and new ones come in. The North Gate Mall has been taken over by ILCC and the old middle school has been used as a senior center and apartments for quite some time. Changes always abound in Spencer, a town not too big and not too small. Anything people need can be found in Spencer whether it's fun, practical shopping or enjoyable entertainment. There are always jobs and housing available with a low crime rate, all within a friendly community. It's all within a short driving distance to the lakes.
What more could one want when relocating or currently living in Spencer? Wat a great place to call "home"!
