Fifth generation keeping first Clay County settler’s farm alive

The California gold rush had panned out well for John Augustine Kirchner, but it had petered out which is how the 27-year-old German immigrant had found himself wandering through the nearly endless sea of grass that was northwest Iowa in 1856.
