Trump’s secret police in Portland

Monday, July 20, 2020

Federal police with no uniform or vehicle marking invaded Portland, Oregon, much to the alarm of Gov. Kate Brown and Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler. In a public statement Brown stated, “We don’t have secret police in this country. This is not a dictatorship. And Donald Trump needs to get his officers off the streets.” Wheeler said in an NPR interview, “A last gasp effort — by a failed president with sagging polling data, who’s trying to look strong for his base. He’s actually using the federal police function in support of his candidacy.”

Federal agents wearing camouflage and tactical gear began arresting and taking protestors away in unmarked vans. A number of members of congress demanded internal government watchdogs investigate Trump’s “use of violent tactics” against peaceful protesters, against the wishes of local state government..

In an effort to remove the federal police, the state of Oregon is preparing a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

It remains to be seen if Trump’s supporters will accept this unprecedented aggressive act by the president. He has already lost support for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. One wonders, what more will they accept.
