Vikings crush Mavs
NORTHWOOD — Clay Central-Everly’s struggles on the grid iron continued in week one of 2018 as the Northwood-Kensett Vikings dealt the Mavs a 67-0 loss to start the season.
The Vikings didn’t take long to establish themselves, and the score ticked up to 39-0 by halftime.
The third quarter didn’t get much better with the Mavericks trailing 60-0 ahead of the fourth.
Continuous clock did CC-E some favors during the final 12 minutes, keeping the Vikings to one touchdown in the fourth for a 67-0 final.
N-K passed just three times with three different players for 13 yards and a touchdown while using 11 different ball carriers, none of which toted the rock more than five times, to run for 323 yards, averaging 10.4 yards per attempt as a team.
Freshmen Cadence Hofmeyer and Stevie Mowery each saw time under center for the Mavs with Hofmeyer going 2-for-2 for 18 yards and Mowery going 2-for-3 for 21 yards and a pick.
Hofmeyer was also the team’s leading rusher with 30 yards on 14 carries. Jayden Joenks ran 13 times for 22 yards. John Galm had two receptions for 23 yards.
Cole Maaland’s seven tackles led the Maverick defense.
N-K recovered two CC-E fumbles in addition to the interception for a 3-0 win in the turnover battle.
The Vikings’ lone kickoff return went 71 yards for a score.
The loss drops CC-E to 0-1 this season ahead of a home game against North Iowa this Friday. North Iowa fell to Harris-Lake Park 34-12 on week one.
