Sioux Central pounds Garrigan to reach substate
ALGONA — The Rebels returned to Bishop Garrigan’s field for district play again Saturday night for the district finals after knocking off Newell-Fonda in the semifinals two days earlier in commanding 11-4 fashion. Saturday’s showing against the Garrigan Golden Bears was even more impressive as Sioux Central’s offense proved to be just as productive while starter Jake Hanson struck out nine and allowed just one hit in a 10-0, five inning Rebel triumph.
Sioux Central advances to Tuesday’s substate final in Bancroft against No. 1-ranked Newman Catholic out of Mason City which boasts a record of 36-1 after winning its district games by scores of 21-2, 9-1 and 9-4. The only loss this season for the Newman Knights came by a score of 8-7 to 3A No. 6-ranked Bishop Heelan. Newman’s average margin of victory in their 36 wins is just over 10 runs. They’ve been held below five runs once by 2A No. 7-ranked Estherville Lincoln Central — a game the Knights won 2-0.
Saturday’s action in Algona saw the Rebels once again get out to a hot start with four runners coming home in the top of the first.
Hanson was dealing from the start, keeping the Golden Bears silent while the Rebel lineup was able to tack on another run in the second and three more in the third for a commanding 8-0 advantage.
Neither team put up a run in the fourth, but Sioux Central brought the mercy rule into play with two runs in the fifth.
Garrigan again came up with a goose egg against Hanson, ending the game at 10-0.
Trace Blomberg had the only multi-hit night for the Rebels, going 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Ben Hargens and Zach Lundquist each ripped doubles and batted in three. Caleb Rock tallied two RBIs on a double. Only two of Sioux Central’s six hits were singles. The Rebels were also walked six times.
Tuesday’s game in Bancroft is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. with a trip to the state tournament, which begins this Friday at Pinnacle Park in Des Moines, up for grabs.
