Conservation District of Iowa and the Clay County Soil & Water District presented 2018 Spencer High School graduate Austin Crew with a $4,000 scholarship after he was named first-place winner of the statewide Conservation District of Iowa Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to students pursuing a college education in conservation and/or agriculture and who show leadership and scholastic achievement. Crew was chosen as the Clay County district winner and his application including an essay describing the future of sustainable agriculture was forwarded on to the regional directors who chose him as the state winner. He has registered for classes at Iowa State University and has decided to enter as an engineering student, considering the agricultural or biological systems engineering major — specifically the bioenvironmental or biorenewable options. He has indicated a commitment to making a difference in the world of sustainable agriculture.
