The team season came to a close for Spencer’s tennis girls Saturday as they suffered a 5-0 defeat at the hands of the region’s top seeded Spirit Lake-Okoboji Indians. Regional meets are scheduled to play all nine matches, but the dual is ended as soon as one team registers five match victories which SL-O did in singles play.

“There was frustration and tears,” Spencer girls tennis coach Bob Schlaeger said. “The girls really care. I believe our future will be very good.”

SL-O came to play, winning the top four matches 6-1, 6-1; 6-1, 6-1; 6-1, 6-3; and 6-2, 6-1.

Hannah Irmiter put up a strong fight as a six seed, falling 6-3, 6-5 while Morgan Fitzgerald won her opening set 7-5 and trailed in the second set 5-3 when the meet was called due to the Indians’ five wins.

SL-O advanced to play Estherville Lincoln Central in the second round of the regional Saturday afternoon at Riverview Park, blanking the Midgets 5-0 as well.

The Indians move on to this coming Saturday’s regional final against Le Mars. That final will take place at Riverview Park in Spencer as well with the winner advancing to the first round of the state tournament.

Spencer’s season continues Wednesday in Le Mars with the individual regional. The Tigers will have two singles players and two doubles tandems attempt to advance to the state individual meet held May 31 and June 1 at Byrnes Park in Waterloo.
