Truck strike injures pedestrian, kills dog

Wednesday, May 9, 2018

A pedestrian and her dog were struck at the intersection of South Grand Avenue and Fourth Street SE on Wednesday, May 2. The pedestrian, Jossie Hanson, of Spencer, was transported to Spencer Hospital by Spencer Ambulance, while the dog died from injuries sustained in the accident.

James Bainbridge, 37, of Sioux Rapids, was stopped at the intersection of Fourth Street SW and South Grand Avenue in his Chevrolet 1500 Silverado, waiting to turn left on Grand. Hanson had pushed the button for the pedestrian cross signal, and once the signal changed she began crossing Grand.

Bainbridge initiated his left hand turn and struck the dog and Hanson, knocking the woman to the ground.

Witnesses at the scene were all unsure if Hanson was crossing within the crosswalk at the time of the collision. There was blood on the pavement from the dog approximately 7 feet north of the marked crosswalk.

Hanson complained of injuries to her head, left leg and right arm. She was diagnosed with a concussion and bruising on her arm and leg.

  • There needs to be a real traffic light and crosswalk on South Grand, not just the button for the flashing lights. Without a red light many drivers don't bother to stop. There is too much traffic in that part of town to not have a safe crosswalk, not to mention the lack of turning lanes.

  • This incident literally happened at an intersection with a stop light and crosswalk

  • Oh assumed it happened farther south where people almost get hit all the time trying to cross Grand

  • We are all aware of the issues farther south, but we are at the mercy of what the state will allow the city to do on the highway. On another note....Bainbridge is the same guy arrested for armed robbery in Hartley.

  • Wow, that last comment came out of nowhere while adding nothing to the conversation.
