Spencer girls take E-Hawk meet

Monday, May 7, 2018

EMMETSBURG — Spencer’s girls went into Monday’s Lady E-Hawk Relays looking to take it a little easy ahead of Thursday’s district meet. Regardless, the Tigers still won the meet, scoring 190.5 points to hold off the meet host by 11.5 points. Clay Central-Everly also ran in the meet, placing fifth.

“This was a night we rested a lot of our top kids that had been nursing minor injuries, and we limited them and the distance kids to only one or two events,” Spencer girls track coach Al Pierce said. “With district comping up, we were trying to find a few answers about our lineup. We saw some really great performances out of our sprinters tonight and a few middle distance runners we asked to go hard in some events. A number of events we weren’t worried about times but merely using the races as training runs.”

Despite the mostly relaxed approach, Spencer still won the 4x100, 4x200, 4x400, 4x800 and distance medley while Nadine Johnson and Abby Weeks added individual wins on the track in the 100 and 400 respectively.

“Our handoffs in the 4x200 and 4x100 looked sharp, and the girls ran really well,” Pierce said. “Abby Borth and Josie Heisinger had good nights for us in their events, and we had a number of girls perform very well. Good way to end the regular season for us. Now our focus will be on polishing up the handoffs and getting our lineup set for district.”

Borth added a win in the high jump while Heisinger placed second in the shot and third in the discus.

CC-E was led by Joie Schmidt who won the 200-meter dash in addition to placing third in the 100 and long jump.

Spencer will travel to Orange City for district competition this Thursday while the Mavericks will be in Sioux Rapids.
