The Spencer Performing Arts Coalition pulled out all the big guns for its seventh annual Alumni Concert.

Dick Baumanís Big Band featured Kurt Schwarck, Spencer alumnus and Spencer High School band director for many, many years. Schwarck played trumpet solos in some of the numbers and seemed to be enjoying the show as much as we were.

The band plays every Monday night during the summer at the Pearson Lakes Art Center in Okoboji so these musicians are used to performing with each other. The band is comprised of 16 outstanding musicians. Some are music educators and some are super-talented in their musical hobby.

The band chose to play several tunes that were arranged by another Spencer native, Roger Neumann. It was definitely an alumni afternoon.

They treated us to Count Basie, Irving Berlin, Glenn Miller, Stan Kenton, Les Brown and Benny Goodman; to name a few.

Laura Hannaís trumpet solos were inspiring and the talent of Taylor Huseman on alto sax was impeccable. Mike Wells on trumpet and Jim Schroeder on tenor sax thrilled us all. Greg Forney did Gene Krupa proud on his drum solos. He was great!

The entire afternoon of big band jazz was very entertaining. The band received a much deserved standing ovation and treated the audience to an encore to round out the show.

I canít imagine Schwarck is anything but humbled and happy to be part of such a fine group of musicians who came together to honor him on Sunday. Thank you to SPARC for a wonderful afternoon of music.
