LE MARS — Spencer’s 120-pounder, TJ Arnold, highlighted the team’s experience at the Lakes Conference Wrestling Tournament Friday night. The sophomore advanced with a first-round bye and pinned his next two opponents in the first period to win a Lakes Conference title and put up 26 team points.

As a whole, the Tigers entered the tournament with three open classes (126, 152, 285) but sent five of their wrestlers to the championship bout, scoring 154 points to place fourth in the team standings. Spirit Lake Park put up 224 to get the win followed by Storm Lake (199) and Le Mars (190).

“Friday was a good way to lead into the sectionals weekend,” Spencer co-head coach Adam Gress said, referring to this coming Saturday’s sectional tournament in Spirit Lake. “We saw guys we will againsee next Saturday and know what needs to be improved on. TJ Showed a lot of poise as a sophomore throughout the tournament and won his first tournament ever in his wrestling career. He is feeling very confident right now and his wrestling has proved it too.”

“I thought we wrestled really well, putting five guys in the finals,” Co-head coach Ryan Pratt said. “TJ has been wrestling really well and should be feeling very confident going into sectionals next weekend. I really like our chances and hope to get quite a few guys through to districts.”

Also reaching the finals but coming up just short of conference crowns were 106-pounder Case Cauthron, 145-pounder Isaiah Spencer, 160-pounder Brody Kacmarynski and 170-pounder Brogan Seier.

“Seier and Cauthron making the finals as freshmen is a great accomplishment for them as individuals,” Gress said. “Those two have been two bright spots in our lineup throughout the year. Kac and Isaiah both wrestled their hearts out in the finals, and if there had been more time in each match, I truly believe they both would have won.”

Spencer was edged via sudden victory in extra time while Kacmarynski was defeated 7-5 amidst a comeback attempt.

Drew Thompson added a third place finish for the Tigers at 195 pounds.

The team’s full attention is now on trying to make runs to Wells Fargo Arena, starting with sectionals Saturday.

“We are looking forward to sectionals with our lineup back and everyone healthy,” Gress said. “These next two weekends are what they have been working for all year long. Everything they have done so far was practice leading up to this weekend and the next.”

Saturday’s sectional starts at noon in Spirit Lake.
