Struttin’ their stuff
Local Just For Kix Showcase to feature Strutters, CC-E dance team
Sunday afternoon, dance fever will sweep the Spencer Field House, transforming the basketball court into an artist canvas. Spencer’s Just For Kix director Suzi Harper and her crew of dancing youth will host its winter showcase at 2 p.m. with the Spencer High School Strutters and Clay Central-Everly Dance Team joining them for an afternoon of precision, execution and movement.
“We do two a year, a winter and a spring show,” Harper said. “The dancers learn three to four dances throughout the year so each showcase is different from the other. I like the winter because it shows the dancers progress throughout the year.”
Harper said the audience will see 413 Just For Kix dancers — ranging from 2 years of age through high school seniors — perform in a variety of styles.
“We also do several small community performances each year,” she said. “It gives our dancers more experience and more confidence in what they are doing.”
Harper indicated she is always excited when they can bring other dance programs to participate in their showcase.
“Both of the Strutters performances are from the state routines they won awards for at the state competition,” Harper said.
Adult admission is $6, with students paying $4, and children under 5 get in free. All proceeds from the event will go back into the dance program.
Just For Kix recently opened a new studio in north Spencer at 2722 Highway Blvd.
“We start new classes right away next week so it’s time for new dancers to join,” Harper said. “Fourth grade and up will be starting their competition dance routines.”
Programs in grades four to 12 attend three competitions each year.
