Monte Gerald Scholten, 77, passed away on Dec. 14, 2017, surrounded by family in Scottsdale, Arizona. His wit, wisdom and warm spirit made the world a better place. An Army veteran, he is fondly remembered for his successful franchise of women's clothing stores — anchored by the Women’s Shop in Spencer, Iowa. Even then, he always made time for story telling, asparagus hunting, boating or fishing. His family moved to Scottsdale, Arizona, in 1984, where he started carving and awoke his artistic side. His original handmade furniture and mirrors are a treasure that will be cherished for generations.
He is preceded in death by his first wife of 47 years, Kathryn Allen Scholten; father, Marinus Scholten; and brother, Ralph Scholten.
He is survived by his daughters: Debbie (Hameed) Toorani, Jessica (Stephen) Johnston and Katie (Thomas) Mobley; son, Chris; his grandchildren: Ryan, Alia, Emma and Cole; his second wife, Joyce Spohn; sister, Shirley (Mick) Hirth; brother, Lyle (Joyce) Scholten; and the matriarch of his family, mother, Margaret Swanson Scholten.
In his memory, he would ask everyone to “Embrace Joy.”
A memorial gathering will be held in Scottsdale on Feb. 10, 2018, at 2 p.m. Roadrunner Resort Club House, 1149 N. 92nd St., Scottsdale, AZ 85256.
