Iowa Lakes Community College women downed twice
NORFOLK, Neb — The Iowa Lakes women’s basketball team opened the Hawk Classic, hosted by Northeast Community College, by falling to Northeast 95-61 Friday.
The Lakers were led by Marissa Ruiz with 17 points and four assists. Lemia Ntor-Ue added 15 points and six rebounds.
“Tonight was a tough night for the Lakers,” Laker women’s basketball coach Ashley Martin said. “I am anxious to see how we respond to the new opportunity tomorrow. I thought we grew tonight and are beginning to see how hard you have to play every possession.”
The loss moved the Lakers to 1-1 on the season and 0-0 in conference play.
Iowa Lakes returned to action Saturday in the second day of the Hawk Classic, taking on North Platte Community College at noon.
The Knights made it an 0-2 trip to Norfolk for the Lakers, winning Saturday’s game 87-78.
The Lakers were led by Mia Wassink’s dominant double-double of 37 points and 13 rebounds while making 11-of-12 at the charity stripe. Ntor-Ue added 11 points and seven boards.
“I liked our energy and effort today,” Martin said. “I was extremely proud of Mia Wassink’s performance today. I thought she established her presence on the low block and rebounded the ball really well. She did a great job of being a vocal leader on the floor as well. I look for us to build off of this weekend and continue to improve. It is early in the season, and we are embracing the process of improving every day.”
The Lakers are now 1-2 on the season and 0-0 in conference play. They’ll return home Tuesday to take on Northwestern JV at 5:30 p.m.
