Plenty to talk about

Sunday, November 5, 2017

By now, everyone knows there was indeed a sixth game of the World Series, as well as a seventh, and deciding game. I congratulate the Dodgers for making the 2017 Series one for the record books. My hat is off to The Houston Astros for living up to the hype and expectations. They split the games on the road, and took two of three in Houston. Great show, American League!

Now for something closer to home. There is activity atop the Grand Avenue Community Outreach Center, indicating the work has begun for replacing the roof. Prayers are being answered, the generous citizens of Spencer and the surrounding towns are coming through once again! Praise God for all who are supporting this Christ-centered outreach effort!

By the time this is in print, the curtain will have come down on all three performances of "Fiddler on The Roof. The thespians of the Spencer High School Drama Department have outdone themselves with this magnificent effort! Superb acting, robust singing, great casting and orchestral support all contributed to a totally enjoyable offering. Hats off to Larry Untiet and all of his helpers!

It's been a wild week in other matters both foreign and domestic. Perhaps there were benevolent reasons to have in place an immigration policy known as the Diversity Visa Lottery plan, back in 1990. I'm no policy expert, but it is plain to see we are living in a completely different world climate some 25 years later, thanks to the likes of the Islamic State group, and the radicalization of vulnerable Americans or wannabes. The inscription at the base of the Statue of Liberty reads: "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses, yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. It refers to the homeless and tempest tossed, not criminals, terrorists and those who want to destroy our citizens any way they can. The president is right, we must strengthen our vetting of all who want to come to America, and be sure those who set about to kill Americans are brought to justice swiftly. That goes for former Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl as well! Yes, it is a "total disgrace" that he got off lightly and fellow soldiers were injured trying to save him from his captors.

Oh, yes, as of 6:15 p.m., Nov. 4, The Iowa Hawkeyes thump The Ohio State Buckeyes 55-24! Who says miracles are in short supply these days!
