No. 4 Garrigan too much for Sioux Central
ALGONA — Coming off a difficult loss to Alta-Aurelia last week, Sioux Central’s football boys didn’t have things get any easier Friday night, traveling to Algona for a date with No. 4-ranked Bishop Garrigan. The Golden Bears simply had too much firepower, thumping the Rebels 32-6.
The Rebels’ lone score came on a 19-yard pass from Jake Hanson to Chase Jessen at the end of the third to make it a 20-6 game going into the final stanza, but Sioux Central couldn’t get its rushing attack going like it wanted to all night, running for just 101 yards as a team against a stout Garrigan defense that won the turnover battle 2-0 (two INTs) and came up with two crucial stops on fourth-and-short.
Ben Hargens shouldered the load with 20 carries for 87 yards. Jacob Gasperi added 14 on 10 attempts.
Hanson finished with 33 yards on 4-of-11 passing with one score and two picks.
Caden Krager, Prestan Samson and Carter Beckman led the Rebel defense with nine, 8.5 and seven tackles respectively. Beckman also added a sack.
The loss drops Sioux Central to 1-2 this season and 0-1 in district play. The Rebels are back out on the road this coming Friday, traveling to Marcus to take on Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn/Remsen Union.
MMCRU fell to Fort Dodge St. Edmond Friday night 27-20. Elsewhere in the district, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn took care of South O’Brien 27-14, and Ridge View lit up North Union 45-0.
