Arla Kintigh, a retired local English teacher, will present her new book, “Fairgoers Do Not Live on Fried Food Alone” at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Spencer Public Library.

Just in time for the Clay County Fair’s centennial year, Kintigh will present her book which contains researched historical perspectives of the fair along with stories of fair traditions such as agriculture, food, arts, entertainment, racing and other areas. In her presentation, Kintigh will share fair traditions and also the joys and pitfalls of self-publishing.

She has taught in the northwest Iowa community for more than 30 years with her most recent position at Spencer High School. Kintigh currently serves as a writing coach for an Arts On Grand Memoir Workshop group.

After the idea of her new book became an itch she just couldn’t scratch, Kintigh spent 10 months researching and collecting stories and anecdotes about the fair.

“It was a daunting task for a self-proclaimed “fair nobody,” she said. “But, the desire to preserve deserving stories was strong.”

Her book contains more than 200 interviews along with over 250 historical and family photos of the fair.
