Letter to the Editor
Presidential travel bashing
I had to laugh when I read the letter slamming President Obama’s travel expenses in the Sunday, April 9, Des Moines Register. According to the Washington Post, three trips to Mar-a-Lago by Trump cost an estimated $10 million. At the rate Trump is going, he will exceed, in only one year, Obama’s eight-year travel total of 97 million! Furthermore, how many millions of dollars did it cost to build that secure room at Mar-a-Lago where Trump was meeting with the Security Council and how much did it cost to fly all those people to Florida? It seems that meeting would have been more appropriately held at the White House.
Why are taxpayers basically supporting three White Houses for the Trump family (Washington, Florida and New York)? I realize that presidents need to get away and relax, but almost every weekend? The Obama family and other presidents used Camp David (62 miles from D.C.) which is owned by the U.S. government, both as a get away and to host foreign dignitaries. Apparently Trump thinks it is “too rustic.” If he requires gold-plated chairs (see photo with Chinese president), maybe he should contribute something from his own billions instead of the American taxpayer footing the bill.
