Laker women 0-2 at DMACC Classic
BOONE — The Iowa Lakes women’s basketball team was back in action after the holiday break for two games this past weekend at the DMACC Classic. Iowa Lakes faced off against the Briar Cliff JV on Friday, falling 55-63.
The Lakers were led by Mia Wassink who finished with a double-double, scoring 16 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Point guard Lauryn Smith scored 13 points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out six assists.
The Lakers were back in action the next afternoon, losing a hard fought battle to the St. Thomas JV 70-67. The Lakers were up 16-15 after the first quarter, but St. Thomas went on a 24-7 run to go into halftime. The Lakers came out strong in the third quarter to cut the lead to nine going into the fourth.
With 5:25 to go in the final quarter, the game was tied at 60. The Lakers went on a 6-0 run to lead 66-60 late in the game but were unable hold on for the win.
Leading the Lakers was Lauryn Smith with nine assists, six rebounds, four steals and 15 points, including going 8-for-8 from the free-throw line. Freshmen Lemia Ntor-Ue contributed 13 points and nine rebounds.
“It was nice to get back at it after a long break," ILCC women's basketball coach Ashley Martin said. "This weekend was a good tuneup as we look to start conference play. I thought Lauryn had a great weekend both as a point guard and as a sophomore leader."
The Lakers move to 6-8 on the season. The Lakers return to action on Wednesday when they'll host Central Community College out of Columbus, Nebraska, at 5:30 p.m. The game was originally scheduled for Dec. 17 and was postponed due to inclement weather.
