Tigers take 4th at West Sioux Invite
HAWARDEN — Led by a tournament title from 113-pounder Cade Hopkins, Spencer put up 182.5 points at the West Sioux Invite this past Saturday to finish in fourth place as a team — half a point behind West Sioux.
Brookings (South Dakota) took the team title with 236 points, and Central Lyon/George-Little Rock put up 211.5 to finish in second. MOC-Floyd Valley (154) and Hinton (110) were the only other teams in the 10-team invitational to break triple digits as a squad.
Spencer got 24 points from Hopkins and 22 points each from Isaiah Spencer (132 pounds), Eric Beehler (152) and Nic Hoefling (285) as each of the three Tigers came in second in their brackets.
Four more Spencer wrestlers placed fourth led by an 18-point performance from Brody Kacmarynski (160). Alex Najera’s efforts earned 15.5 points, Chris Gross (126) picked up 14 and Jacob Pingel (195) brought in 12.
TJ Arnold (120) was the lone Tiger to place fourth in the tournament, scoring seven points. Dakota Amendt (106) put up 14 points despite placing fifth due to two pins and a major decision.
Erick Phillips (220) placed sixth and scored nine points while Trent Freeman (145) rounded out the team scoring with three points from a sixth place finish.
Spencer’s grapplers get back into action Tuesday night with a trip to Sheldon for duals against Sheldon-South O’Brien and Sioux City West. This coming Saturday they’ll travel to Des Moines for the always challenging West Des Moines Valley Tournament.
