Spencer marks 40th consecutive All-State Festival appearance

Tuesday, February 10, 2015

On Monday of this week, high school drama groups, who received the coveted Outstanding Performance Awards for their presentations at the Large Group Speech state contests held in the four geographic regions of the state Saturday, were announced by the state office of Iowa High School Speech Association in Des Moines.

In record setting fashion, Spencer High School students, were informed that seven of their groups were the recipients of the Outstanding Performance Award. These awards are given out to those groups who, in the state contest judges' opinion, were the "best of the best," and stood out over and above all of the other performances that they saw the day of the contest.

In addition to these group awards, two Spencer High School theater students, Rachel Sather and Hannah Zulk, became the first Spencer students in the 40-year history of the Super State All-State Festival to have each earned eight Outstanding Performance Awards during their four years at Spencer High School.

These groups will now advance to the Super State All-State Festival's 40th anniversary conducted at Iowa State University in Ames on Saturday, Feb. 21. This festival, which celebrates its 40th anniversary of existence this year, consists of the groups from around the state who received Outstanding Performance Awards at the state contest level.

Spencer High School now has the distinction of being the only high in the state of Iowa to have qualified and performed at the Super State All-State Festival for all 40 years of it's existence. During all 40 years, the drama students have been under the direction of Larry Untiet.
