Go Bananas team 'Spencer Girls' stays the course

A torrential rainfall, coupled with occasional lightning and thunder, did not lead to the cancellation of the first Informa Go Bananas 5K Run/Walk for World Cancer Research in Des Moines in early June. Instead, it forced the "Spencer Girls" team to get a bit creative. The six-member team, comprised of friends who graduated from the Spencer High School class of 1976, began their walk inside the Iowa State Capitol building with the hope that the rain would let up so that they could take to their course. The team climbed the steps to all three floors and was able to enjoy the 132-year-old building. With the Capitol portion of the race completed, the continuing rain led team member Sue Bryson Scoles to propose taking to the skywalks which connect many of the buildings in downtown Des Moines. The six team members sloshed through the rain to enter the dry skywalk system where they were able to complete their modified 5K race course. Informa employee Judy Fisk Adair noted the group had indeed ran, walked and even accomplished some meandering as they pursued their goal of completing the 5K. The Spencer Girls team included leader Shelley Wedel Anson, two-time breast cancer survivor; Sue Bryson Scoles; Lori Golden Meyer; Sheryl Monkelien; Kay Patterson McCann; and Judy Fisk Adair. The women raised $650 for the American Institute for Cancer Research. (Photo submitted)
