Hometown Hero has gone to the dogs

Friday, March 15, 2013

Donna Erickson will be the next Hometown Hero recipient due to her work with People for Pets here in Spencer. Erickson has been with the animal shelter since 2000 and describes what she does as a "24/7 job."

On March 18, Donna Erickson will receive the Hometown Hero award. The Modern Woodmen will be honoring Erickson for her "dedication and countless hours of service to People for Pets."

"We like to encourage volunteers, and recognize volunteers," Modern Woodmen Financial Representative Candice Getting said. "When I was given the task of coming up with a hometown hero, I immediately thought of Donna. She is in the public eye, but I've gotten to know her over the years and she does so much more behind the scenes than the public realizes."

Along with the award, a donation will be given to People for Pets as well.

"I would like People for Pets to get another [donation]," Getting said. "We were lucky enough to do matching funds last year and give them a donation, I would just like to keep that going to a worthy organization."

After rescuing a dog outside of Terril in 2000 she began volunteering with People for Pets. It was after she contacted the Humane Society about the dog, they would have put the dog down because it had a black coat.

"I like to care for people and animals in need," Erickson said. "My job is 24/7, but that's OK. I answer my phone pretty much whenever. I got called a little after 10 about a little dog wandering the highway south of Terril."

Erickson took calls about helping a German Shepard while she was on vacation in Las Vegas.

"I was sitting there looking out the window at the Bellagio, and thinking this is what I was meant to do. You start thinking about the animals, and it gets in your blood," she said.

Her favorite part of working with animals is the peace of mind she receives from the job. And when she isn't helping animals, Erickson has been taking care of a woman who suffers from Alzheimer's for 12 years.

"I'm doing something to work on the problems of homeless animals, and spading and neutering," Erickson said. "Its just something in ya. You either have it or you don't. I never thought I would be in this deep. I just like to care for people and animals in need."

The event will be held at the Spencer Godfather's Pizza on March 18, at 5:30 p.m. If you are interested in attending call 712-580-5735 by noon on Monday.

People attending are asked to bring dog treats, paper towels and bleach to donate to People for Pets.

If you are interested in volunteering with People for Pets, the easiest way to find out what they need is by calling 712-580-2738.

My hat's off to Donna and the rest of the staff at People for Pets. They need to be commended on a regular basisfor the work they do. Everyone needs a pat on the back now & then. Animals experience the exact same emotions that we humans do. Imagine if your children were beaten or neglected regularly. Imagine your child tied to a tree for their entire lives. I'm so glad that animal abuse has recently become a center stage issue and those who abuse are being brought into the spotlight.
