Big 3rd quarter propels Western in 76-47 romp

The Spencer girls played the No. 1 team in Class 2A tough for the first half, even outscoring the Wolfpack 14-12 in the second quarter. The third quarter would be a different story as Western Christian (19-1) opened the game up with 33 points in the quarter and outscored Spencer by 20 in the period to go on to win, 76-47, Friday night in Spencer.

The full-court press that Spencer managed in the first half became too much in the second half as turnovers were forced frequently by the Wolfpack, who finished with 21 team steals. Spencer turned the ball over a season-high 36 times.

Western's Brooke Wolterstorff looks for a way around Spencer's Kirstin Martindale at the Spencer Field House on Friday, February 1.
Spencer trailed just 27-21 at halftime before being outscored 49-26 in the second half.

"Hopefully it teaches us it's a 32-minute game, and when a team's pressing like that you have to fight fire with fire and be aggressive and not back on your heels," Spencer coach Don Martindale said. "It takes total focus and intensity for 32 minutes versus a team like this and you have to be strong the whole game."

Brooke Wolterstorff led all scorers with 21 points (7-of-21 FG), grabbed 10 rebounds and made six steals. Jamie Gesink scored 16 off the bench (6-of-7 shooting) and totaled four steals. Alissa Pollema scored 12 with six steals, and Elissa Jansman scored 11.

Heather Williamson led Spencer with 13 points and also grabbed five rebounds with two steals before fouling out. Kirstin Martindale scored five points with a game-high 12 rebounds.

"Heather Williamson played the best game she's played as a Tiger," Martindale added.

Spencer's final regular season game will be Tuesday, Feb. 5 at Spirit Lake High School at 6:15 p.m.
