South O'Brien entered the game on a four-game winning streak of its own but were limited offensively due to Sioux Central's defense, which totaled 11 steals and held the Wolverines to just three points in the third quarter.
"We played really well defensively and rebounded well," head coach John Barbier said. "South O'Brien's a good team that's tough to keep off the boards. I wasn't pleased with our poise down the stretch. We had some chances to put them away and didn't, and we were fortunate they didn't convert on their chances."
Junior Erin Rachuy led the Rebels with seven rebounds and four assists, while Taylor Fahnlander and Nicole Hamilton each had three steals.
The Rebels will face Class 1A's No. 1-ranked team, Newell-Fonda (17-1) to close the regular season at home on Tuesday, Feb. 5. Sioux Central lost to the Mustangs in Newell on Jan. 8, 50-38. The 2A district playoffs will begin on Saturday, Feb. 9, with Sioux Central hosting H-M-S (8-10) at 7 p.m.
"We've got a big game against our rivals, Newell-Fonda, on Tuesday so we're not looking past that one, but heading into the playoffs we're confident and playing well," Barbier said. "But humility is only a game away."
NOTE: The Sioux Central boys lost to South O'Brien in the second game of the doubleheader, 52-31.
