Lady Tigers stumble against Bulldogs
Spencer falls 52-35 at home Friday night
The Le Mars girls controlled much of the game Friday night, especially the fourth quarter, as they handed Spencer a 52-35 home loss at the Field House. The Bulldogs led by eight after the third quarter, 37-29, before blowing the game wide open with a 14-0 run to start the final period. The Le Mars lead expanded to 22 (51-29) midway through the fourth quarter.
"For whatever reason over the last couple games, we've lost a step defensively, and that's not characteristic of this team," Spencer girls coach Don Martindale said. "Le Mars is starting to play the way we kind of expected them to this year. They're very athletic and talented."
Le Mars improves its season record to 6-10 and is now 6-5 in Lakes Conference play, which ties them with Spencer in conference record. The Lady Tigers are also 6-5 in the Lakes and 10-8 overall.
Kirstin Martindale again led the team in scoring with 12 points, while Alexa Allen and Emily Burns each added six. The Bulldogs' pressure defense forced 20 turnovers on the night. Molly Renken led Le Mars with 13 points and Mary Kate Eckstaine added 11.
The Lady Tigers took a brief lead midway through the second quarter, 18-17, before Le Mars got back on top and led 26-21 at the half.
Spencer will travel to Storm Lake on Tuesday for a Lakes Conference game, its third-to-last conference game of the season.
Le Mars defeated Spencer in Le Mars on Dec. 14, 39-35.
