Spirit Lake Fire Chief Dave Kollasch said an electrical short is responsible for damage to the lower level of a resort eight-plex Thursday morning on the north end of Highway 86.

His department was paged at 9:21 a.m. Thursday to Cutty's Resort, which is less than a mile south of the Highway 9 and 86 intersection near Spirit Lake. Smoke was coming from the lower level of a rental unit on the southeast end of the Cutty's campus.

Two bedrooms on the lower level sustained smoke damage. The electrical fire started in a lower level hallway, and nearby areas sustained heat damage.

Firefighters used two entrances to access the lower level of the building. Alliant Energy was on hand to cut the building's power.

Dickinson County Sheriff's Deputies and Emergency Management were on hand to assist the Spirit Lake Fire Department.

"We had called Milford Fire & Rescue for backup and for water, but we didn't need them," Kollasch said. "We cancelled them en route. It worked out all right."

The resort sees a majority of its traffic in the summer. Guests were expected for a weekend stay, but the eight-plex was unoccupied at the time of the fire.

Members of the Fire Department were able to start ventilating the building by 10 a.m. They were able to begin their fire investigation within an hour.
