The Spencer High School Field House, which normally houses basketball and wrestling action, was transformed into a rehearsal zone Saturday as students from 17 area high schools, including Spencer and Clay Central-Everly, participated in the Large Group Speech contest.

Thursday Night Live

The 15 Spencer High School groups receiving "I" ratings will give a public performance at "Thursday Night Live!" at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31 at the Old Spencer Middle School Auditorium.

Sixty-one SHS students, 15 groups advance in Large Group Speech

Spencer High School drama students competed in the district contest of the Iowa High School Speech Association for Large Group Speech on Saturday at Spencer High School. Competing against participants from 16 other northwest Iowa high schools, the Spencer students came away with 15 Excellent "I" ratings and one "Good" "II" rating.

The 15 groups receiving "I" ratings earned the right to advance and compete in the Northwest Iowa State Contest, which will be conducted Saturday, Feb. 2 at Le Mars Community High School.

At the state level, students will also be competing for the coveted Outstanding Performance Award, which earns them a trip to the "Super State" All-State Festival to be held at Iowa State University in Ames on Feb. 15-16.

All of these groups will give a public performance at "Thursday Night Live!" at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31 at the Old Spencer Middle School Auditorium.

Large Group Speech is under the direction of Hall of Fame coach Larry Untiet, who is assisted by Katie Kardell (Musical Theater Director), Erin McDermott (Choreographer), Eric Meeter (Short Film Director) and student assistant directors Sean McCord, Cayla Cunningham, Amber Ellis, Kevin Grimes II, Wil Boyens, and Rachel Dole.
