Kacmarynski beats defending champ

Tuesday, January 8, 2013

Morningside's Tyler Kacmarynski upset reigning NAIA National Champion Eric Thompson in the Mustangs' dual against No. 1-ranked Grand View on Saturday in Des Moines, Iowa.

Kacmarynski, ranked fifth in the latest NAIA rankings, won a 9-3 decision against the second-ranked Thompson in the heavyweight bout. However, Kacmarynski's triumph wasn't enough to prevent a 23-13 Grand View victory in the dual scoring.

Morningside won four of the 10 weight divisions, including each of the last three, where No. 1-ranked Brian Block won a 5-0 decision against seventh-ranked Cody Swim at 184 lbs. and Chris Bridgeford won a 4-2 decision against A.J. Mott at 197 lbs.

Kory Kistner had the Mustangs' other triumph with a 10-1 major decision against eighth-ranked Alex Peitz in the 125 lb. bout. The setback dropped the Mustangs' record to 5-2 heading into next weekend's Cliff Keen National Duals in Springfield, Ill.
