The Spencer wrestlers faced their toughest competition of the season Saturday at the Ames Jack Mendenhall Invitational, which featured 18 teams. The Tigers finished in eighth place with six place-winners led by John Christopherson's first-place finish at 126 pounds. Christopherson won by two pins, a major decision and won a 6-4 match in the finals over Dowling's Jonathon Eide.
Trevor Streuli finished second at 113, going 3-1 and losing by fall to Clayton Eicher of Valley in the finals. Tanner Schaefer lost his first match of the season at 160 pounds, falling to Webster City's Connor Larson by a 5-0 decision, but bounced back to finish third.
Levi Gilmore and Bailey Hawn both took fifth place at 138 and 120 pounds, respectively, while Blaine Johnson took sixth for the Tigers.
"When you wrestle the quality that's in central Iowa, it really exposes what you need to work on, and we got exposed," Spencer coach David Schaefer said. "We were a little flat out of the chute and it showed with only six first-round wins. We wrestle a schedule where we're going to lose some matches, but the goal for it is to make us better at the end of the season."
Spencer will be back on the mat tonight (Tuesday) for a dual in Sheldon. The Tigers are 11-0 in duals this season.
