On Monday, 10 Spencer Middle School students competed for the title of Spencer Middle School National Geography Bee champion. The National Geography Bee is sponsored by the National Geographic Society, with corporate support from Google. The goal of the program, open to all fourth through eighth graders in America, is to improve the geographic knowledge of our youth. After several rounds of questioning, Wren Vogelschmidt (below), a seventh grade student, was declared school champion. Vogelschmidt has now earned the right to take a state-qualifying test to attend the State Geography Bee, which will be conducted in April. If his test score qualifies in the top 100 in the state, he will qualify for the State Bee. Vogelschmidt is the son of Lee Vogel and Julie Schmidt of Spencer. Participants (above) included (back row) Haley Bendlin, Nate Strohman, Wren Vogelschmidt, Marshall McCord, Darrian Adkins, (front row) Nate Fisher, Angelica Morales, Sarah Gilderhus, Austin Crew and Elliot Hudson.
