Spencer opens after break with two big wins

The Spencer wrestling team returned to action after a two-week holiday break and picked up where they left off with their Lakes Conference dual winning streak. The Tigers won their 43rd and 44th consecutive Lakes dual, defeating Cherokee, 59-18, and ELC, 57-20. ELC edged Cherokee, 40-39, in the other dual.

Spencer is unbeaten in duals this season (11-0). They picked up five pins against Cherokee (along with three forfeits) and three falls versus ELC (with six forfeits).

"I thought we were a little flat tonight, some of that has to do with the forfeits, but we've got to persevere in those situations," head coach Dave Schaefer said. "It was good to get the wins and good to get back and refocused."

Starting this Saturday, Spencer will make three trips south to tournaments and face some of the state's best competition. The Tigers will wrestle at the Ames tournament this Saturday.

"It's a great challenge for us and it's an opportunity to get tested against some tough competition," Schaefer said. "We've got some things to clean up from tonight. We'll respond to the challenge."

In the only match featuring two ranked wrestlers Thursday night, ELC's Oscar Ramirez handed Levi Gilmore his first loss on the season (19-1), a 16-6 major decision at 132 pounds. Ramirez placed sixth last year at 120 pounds.

"Levi's looking forward to another shot at him. They'll be matched up a few more times at conference, and sectionals and districts. We like our chances down the line," Schaefer said.

It was also Senior Night at the Fieldhouse, where seven senior wrestlers were honored, as well as senior managers, cheerleaders and statisticians. The senior wrestlers this year are Bailey Hawn, John Christopherson, Tanner Schaefer, Blaine Johnson, Tony Botcher, Joe Strock and Dustin Meyeraan.

The next dual for Spencer will be Tuesday, Jan. 8 at Sheldon.
