The Spencer girls completed a fantastic season by qualifying eight events (5 relays, 3 individuals) for the state meet, and placed in five. Junior Ali Meister took second in the 100-meter hurdles and junior Taylor Glover took fourth in the open 400. The sprint medley relay took fourth and the 4x100 took fifth as Spencer displayed some of the top sprinters in the state this past season. Nearly all return this year as the Lady Tigers will look to build on a successful 2012 season.

The Spencer girls track team ended the 2012 season with four top-5 finishes at the State Meet May 17-19 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines and earned 23 team points, which placed them 11th overall in 3A.

The Lady Tigers got things started on the final day (Saturday, May 19) with a school record in the sprint medley, which was a timed final. Kelsey Rolfes, Ali Meister, Kim Shabino and Taylor Glover turned in a 1:49.91 to set a new Spencer record. They finished first in Heat 2 by over two seconds but had to wait until Heat 3 finished, which featured Assumption, Wahlert and MOC-Floyd Valley.

"Those four kids are really focused right now," Pierce said of the sprint medley team a day prior to the final. "We're not in the fast heat but you never know what can happen. We've got a great 4x100 team, as we showed today, and one of the best quarter-milers in Taylor Glover, so we hope to hit our goals and finish well in the sprint med."

Meister, who participated in four finals on the final day, turned in the best Spencer finish of the weekend by taking second in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.45. Mount Pleasant's Leslie Taylor won the event in 15.12.

Glover turned in another sub-59-second 400 to place fourth on Thursday, May 18 behind Davenport Assumption's Maddie Irmen and Rose Ripslinger, and MOC-Floyd Valley's Alexis Conaway. The Assumption teammates placed first and second at last year's State Meet also.

The 4x100 team, which featured the same girls as the sprint medley, placed fifth in 50.80. The shuttle hurdle team of Kelli Kramer, Ashley Mahrt, Ali Meister and Karis Rhode took eighth.

Cierra Guerrero took 15th in the 3,000 meters, and the girls 4x800 team finished eighth in the first heat and 19th overall.
