Sophomore Taylor Sieperda closed out her second high school swim season with a second-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke and a third-place finish in the 50 freestyle at the state meet on Saturday at the Marshalltown YMCA. With two top-3 finishes, Sieperda earned First Team All-State honors.
Individually, Sieperda improved on her state finishes from last year when she tied for fourth in the 50 free and took sixth in the 100 free. Sara Bentley, a junior from Ames, won the 100 backstroke in 56.89, edging Sieperda's personal best of 57.80. In the 50 free, Sieperda swam her second-fastest time ever (23.92) but finished behind Waukee's Maddie Gehrke (23.34) and Maddy Burnham of Bettendorf (23.72). Gehrke also beat Sieperda in the 50 free at the regional meet.
While the high school season is over, Sieperda will continue swimming competitively this weekend at the Minneapolis Grand Prix at the University of Minnesota from Nov. 9-11. This meet is part of the USA Swimming Series and will feature Olympic champions Missy Franklin and Ryan Lochte.
Sieperda will swim in three events on Saturday and Sunday - the 50 free, 100 free and 100 back.
